New games - what to get.

Recommended Posts

Being a poor student, I've missed a lot of releases over the past year. But now having a summer job, I'm looking at getting a couple of games to catch up a little.

Looking at Chronicles of Riddick and Prototype right now. I haven't played gears of war 2, overlord 2 (missed the first one, though did enjoy the demo) mirrors edge, fable 2 or mass effect either though (not a huge RPG fan mind you). Any ideas? Cheers.

Definitely pick up Fable 2, Mass Effect and Mirror's Edge.

I'd also buy Fight Night Round 4, Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV, Dead Space, Guitar Hero World Tour/ Metallica (if you like GH games) and Left 4 Dead.

I also love Bionic Commando, Prototype, Prince of Persia, Halo Wars and Banjo & Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, but the "cool kids" frown upon them :p

Battlefield 1943 is out this week on XBLA too for 1200 MPs

Bionic Commando, excuse me while i upchuck my St Pauli's Girl-drenched cereal :x

Get Gears 2, Fable 2, Dead Space, Mass Effect (that's more than a year bub), Resident Evil 5 and FEAR 2. Mostly sequels, yes, but that's the state of the industry. The last couple of months have been terrible for gamers, but then i haven't played Prototype and Ghostbusters yet. The Riddick and Red Faction games are OK, sometimes even good, but i wouldn't buy them. A rental if you can. Red Alert 3 and Halo Wars were also good for smooth RTS action, and there's tons of stuff on XBL you can download, too. That should tide you over till the holiday rush, which is only three-four months away now...

Gears 2, RE 5, Fallout 3, and Ghostbusters were all great. Gears 2 and RE 5 are must have's though, so be sure to check those out ASAP.

neo (got it right this time :D ), you should totally check out Ghostbusters. It has a few technical problems, but overall it's great. It's a bit short, but it's REALLY fun while it lasts. I haven't checked out the MP yet, but I hear it's pretty good.

Cheers for the replies. I'm not really into fighting games (or boxing games for that matter), and already have Dead Space. Don't fancy any more GH / rockband games atm either, kind of bored of them right now.

How easy are Mass Effect and Fable II to get into then? I don't usually get into RPG's that easily, it took me a good few hours to start enjoying Oblivion, then I got bored after a few more hours. Got fallout aswell, haven't played much, but worried it will end up the same.

I haven't got Fable 2 yet, but ME is really easy to get into. It plays more like a shooter than RPG. Don't even hesitate to check it out. It's great. Just be prepared for a whole lot of elevator loading scenes  .

both Mass Effect and Fable 2 are very playable and user friendly, you'll have no problem with them.

thanks for the advice on Ghostbusters jianbing, but can't afford to buy it right now...and renting it's nowhere to be found!

Trine, hands down. Most entertaining game since Braid. Call me oldschool, but I honestly found it much more fun than recent titles like Prototype, ARMA2 (tried demo), or Call of Juarez (although also pretty decent game, must have for western movies lovers).

So far Trine is #1 of 2009. Try demo and see for yourself.

EDIT: Sorry! Thought Trine is coming on X360, but apparently only PC+PlayStation?Network>

Red Faction? Oh please, that's a game you'll really lose your stomach over :x

Metacritic says it's 15% better than Bionic Commando :woot:

Just checked it out, it does look quite cool, might get it on the PSN store.:))

As for recommendations, can't go wrong with Mass Effect, Gears of War 2 and I don't see any Crackdown on your profile, it can be had for very cheap now and it's one of the best games out to date imo.

Mass Effect was awesome but I kept getting lost at first on where to go. Besides that, Gears of War 2, Prototype, Street Fighter IV, RE5, and Prince of Persia are my recommendations. Also if you haven't played Fallout 3 I'd recommend that.

Another vote for Mass Effect.

Best game in existance.

Mass Effect's game mechanics was amazing but if you're going to buy this game. Make sure you explore E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. The main story is... Short...

Yeah, the main story is short (though so epic it made me cry), but there's also 10 or so hours of sidequests. Some of it repetitive, but I really liked the citadel quests.

Yeah but it's still terrible :p

Don't care what following or hype the series has, it's just plain bad. At least imo anyway ;)

Oh and now you listen to metacritic scores? You just ignore them when it's Warner Bros games huh? :p I wonder why ;)

I was being sarcastic, Munky, since you used Metacritic to prove Bionic Commando was a good game and GRIN was a good developer ;) And funny that you think F.E.A.R. 2's reviews are bad since you said reviews in that range were good for BC :D (7% more than BC, actually!)
