New Macbook Pro 13"

Recommended Posts

Got the new macbook pro 13" maxed out (except for 4gb of RAM will wait for the snow before the 8gb transition)! Must say I'm highly impressed with the current build. Transition from a white macbook to this was easy as hell..love the KB illumination being the night owl that I am.. tried the glossy on lots of places including the brightest sunlight and it still manages to be bright, though it does pick up reflection every now and then, not too much of a bother tho!

On the con though, the bottom already picked up a couple scratches and its quite prominent on the aluminum, but on the whole i dont think it makes that much of a difference, the white picked up tons more!

I believe 10.5.7 has been tuned for this new set of macbooks considering the performance is so much better than my white book (I know there are considerable hardware changes, but this seems so much more smoother for a lot of functions), now just waiting for snow leopard to release to see how it performs on this!

Never buy RAM upgrades from Apple.

When you're ready to get 8 GB+ of RAM for Snow Leopard, buy it from Crucial, Newegg or some other place. Last I checked, Apple was still charging over $1,000 for a 4 GB RAM upgrade.

Maybe the faster CPU, better video card, and faster ram have something to do with 10.5.7 running better then on your old MacBook.

Just a thought.

+1

And wow, I thought Apple was ripping me off by charging $1000 for RAM, but I checked a price on Newegg and it was $750. I mean, I thought it would be like $400 or something, it's not as bad as I thought.

But yeah, with Apple you can buy a few RAM upgrades, like the 4GB you chose was a good move, and it's true for every line I think. But if you wanna go for 8 or 16 or 32, put it simply, forget it :p

You don't think Apple is ripping you off by overcharging you some $250 extra for RAM?

Yep, never got my ram from apple, in india ram is cheappppp off the market, so pick it up from there usually, normally transcend though..its not the best brand, but it does its job well.

Yea, the hardware makes tons of difference, as pointed out by Altec, and its good to see considerable difference right in front of your eyes, that is the best part of buying new hardware isn't it!

On the whole though, a most pleasant experience with the laptop.. ive already got envious ppl asking me if they can try it out inspite of owning "state of the art" from other manufacturers.

Well... yeah obviously !

But I said it's not as bad as I thought.

If I have to buy something like this someday I'll get my memory from an online supplier like Newegg or something.

Right now it's not really a question because I'm not rich enough to have a computer where 50% of the value resides in the memory... It'll happen someday I'm not worrying about it :)

4GB upgrade for my new 2009 Mac Mini was 64$ shipped on Crucial.com

The best part about Crucial is that you don't have to sorta be sure, they have the make->model drill-down.

Exactly, same as for pushing the drive limits. :) One can mount more RAM or drive space much cheaper.

4GB Crucial Upgrade for my iMac was $42 at Newegg ;)

As an aside, anyone know if 2x2gb sodimms use much more power than 1x1gb? Battery life is a huuuge factor for me at the mo, especially with a non removable battery.

They do, but it's negligible.

I have 2x2 GB modules in mine and I still get 4+ hours on middle-of-the-road settings on my mid-2008 MacBook Pro (before the nice new batteries), so you shouldn't notice too much of a performance degradation with respect to battery life.

I have the 2x2GB ram on my 13 inch MacBook pro and I get an average of 6:30 battery life.

Yeah, the 13" MBP are pretty much the best small notebooks on the market. Congrats on the purchase!

Tell me please how did those words get into you head considering that 13" MBPs has the WORST screen among notebooks. They cannot even handle RGB (24bit) color.

Worst among notebooks? How many 8-bit non-TN notebook displays are there in the market?

Worst screens... hmmm I dont know where you got that information from.

They might be 6-bit screens but they have one of the most accurate colour reproduction out there.

I know about the whole 8-bit vs 6-bit issue that came out few weeks ago, but how many 13-12 inch screens are there that are 8-bit and have the same colour accuracy?

There are Designers in my company that use the 13in MacBook/Pro. none of them complain about the color, and a few of them are real picky asshholes.

Personally I like the color in my 13in more then the color in the laptops I've had for work (Lenovo T60, T61, T400, HP EliteBook 8530w), or the Acer Ferrari 5e000 that I had before the MacBook.

I have teh non-Pro MacBook, with a 7200RPM 320GB HDD, and 2x2GB ram chips. I get about 4hr 15min browsing the web on wireless and listening to iTunes with brightness at 1/2. Bluetooth off because I never use it.

Anyone else feel the New Macbook Pro 13"s are just re-branded old unibody Macbooks?

Aside from the integrated battery, and now 8GB memory max.... they are.

It's funny, because this is exactly what Phil Schiller said at the keynote... that it's been "rebranded".

And yeah, you STILL get new features and speed increases... I don't see what you're complaining about man...

Well, I have used millions of laptops. in fact probably owned at least 10 brands, usually state of the art as my work requires it, only my last few years have been exclusively macbooks, and from just that experience (call me a casual user or whatever), have been designing for the last 10 yrs since that is part of my profession (which of course translates to my desktop) but this has been the most accurate monitor on a laptop which i have used with especially with respect to print..

A lot of thought went into buying this macbook over various competition and all i can say is that I am extremely satisfied with my purchase which was what this post was about! :)
