gregb0b
Hey everyone, My friend has this issue where his computer will completely shut off once the Warcraft 3 menu pops up. We can watch the cinematic perfectly fine. We thought it was virus related so we just installed a fresh copy of xp pro last night (It needed it anyway). Once it shuts off I have to kill the power switch until the motherboard light turns off then the computer will start. Has anyone ever dealt with this issue before? I've read online and unfortunately since the computer totally loses power I cant get an error code to check up on it. He was able to play Wc3 for the longest time until one day this started happening. Here are his specs: P4 2.4ghz 1 GB of ram ATI Radeon x1600 Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Here is what I've done so far: Updated patches to Wc3 Tried one ram stick at a time in case one was faulty. Tried the game with out a sound card in the machine. Turned down Sound acceleration in dxdiag. Turned down video acceleration in dxdiag. Reinstalled directx 9.0c Tried window mode wc3 My next step is to try another video card but I dont have a cheap one handy at the moment. All the drivers and stuff are up to date. His computer works absolutely fine playing videos, surfing the web, and other things. He is going to install Battlefield 2 to see if it crashes or not later tonight. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Neoauld
have u tried another game also could be a power supply issue
gregb0b
To be honest I've been leaning towards the PSU as well. I just dont understand the logistics of a power supply crapping out when a game menu loads....
Shokus
It could also be the CPU heatsink not sitting properly on the CPU hence causing the CPU to overheat when you run WC3. Or the heatsink fan not spinning properly due to something getting stuck there (or just plain dust). Anyway, take a look around the hardware, I'd be thinking of a processor or PSU issue too. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted July 8, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 8, 2009 I think it's a CPU-related issue. It's possible that the CPU is overheating. I used to have two Pentium 4 systems and the biggest problem I had was dust accumulation. In and around the CPU heatsink, dust would accumulate and overheat the CPU. Check the inside of your case and clean it. Also, check to see if your heatsink and fan are functioning properly. If all else is good, then check the space between the heatsink and CPU. I once had to reapply some thermal paste because the previous one dried up and cracked. Anyway, it'd be a good idea to test another game. Keep us posted! gigapixels Veteran Posted July 8, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 8, 2009 To be honest I've been leaning towards the PSU as well. I just dont understand the logistics of a power supply crapping out when a game menu loads.... Well, the video card isn't doing much work until it starts rendering the 3D elements, so it's not using as much power until then either. The clips that are played before the menu are no big deal, but the menu does have 3D elements and it will immediately pull the power necessary to render those elements. If the PSU can't supply that power, the computer will shut off. I have a hard time believing this is a heat issue since this is happening at exactly the same time every time. Magichat
I think it has to do with the computer being hit by lightning. or maybe its from living through a house fire.
