Time Capsule help!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I got a 500GB time capsule the other day (brand new and quite cheap from eBay) but I'm having non-stop problems with it.

1. It's connected to my router via ethernet cable... and is a wifi basestation itself. However, half the time it doesn't show up in my list of wireless connections to connect too! Why is it so random?

2. Sometimes it gets stuck on preparing... or uploading say 406kb/406kb - wirelessly. When connected by ethernet it worked fine.

3. I sometimes get the error about the back up mount cannot be mounted or something.

Any ideas before I pull my hair out and sell the damn thing?

Cheers! :D

what kind of Internet? Cable ? DSL? Satelite?

If you have a Cable connection you need to reset your modem before you connect the Time Capsule to it, The Reason is Most Cable Modems lock themselves to the device they first connect to (as in your PC).

Turn off and unplug (ethernet and Power) BOTH Modem and Time Capsule for about 1-2 minutes, then plugin Time Capsule (power and Ethernet to Modem) , connect its ethernet to Cable Modem, wait 1-2 mins, then Plug in power for Modem.

It should connect to your Time Capsule and be good to go after you set it up

If your Computer is a PC you need to download and install the Airport Utility For Windows, and then check for Time Machine Firmware Updates, once done you can setup the Time Capsule from that,

and it Will show up as a standard HDD in my Computer, instead of as a Network Device.

Sorry should have included all that.

Its DSL - and the TC is connected to it via bridge (so the router handles the DHCP etc etc). I've also reset router just incase too.

I'm using a Mac at the moment, and I've also installed the latest firmware update.

Flipping annoying! :'(

Someone correct me if im wrong, but i dont think you need to bridge it,

I'm not sure how else you can connect it - from the options the TC provides.

It's under the "Internet" tab in Airport Utility, the options are share one IP or distribute IPs. Bridging lets the router handle all of that.

It's working alright at the moment, but it's so temperamental! Well, apart from time machine now 'preparing backup' for the last 5 minutes! Why does it take so long each time?!

Edit: Apparantly it does that because it doesn't trust the log. Still doesn't explain why sometimes I cant even find the time capsule network... when I'm right next to it lol

ernet it worked fine.

3. I sometimes get the error about the back up mount cannot be mounted or something.

The backup failing because the disk is read only has been creeping up more for some since 10.5.7, search Apple for a quick fix but it isn't surefire. Should be resolved in 10.5.8 but take a few minutes and file a bug report so it stays up the list of things to be worked on.

Time Capsules are so hit ant miss. I have two of them and they are complete crap if you ask me. May I ask why you still have a router when the TC has the wireless features? If I were you I would remove the router and make the TC the main access point for all machines. Seems to be a more straightforward solution

The wireless on the router is turned off... its how I connect to the ADSL (don't have a seperate broadband modem, unlike I did with cable).

So far so good, it's backing up quite quickly and after I formatted and started again, the backups have worked alright so far. Fingers crossed!
