Question about 2nd Xbox

Recommended Posts

I'm probably going to get a 2nd Xbox to use as a media center in my bedroom. What do I need to do regarding my Xbox Live account? Can I log into it from a 2nd console? I'd like to be able to use Netflix.

It might be kind of a hassle if you plan on using the same XBL gold account. I don't know if you have to have a gold account to access Netflix or not but if not, then you wouldn't need a second XBL gold account (just a normal silver one). If you want to use the same one, you you will have migrate your account back and forth.

He could just move the drive back and forth, the only issue that I can think of is playing installed games. Beyond that, theoretically it should work without a problem. Also, I think Netflix is only accessible to Gold members, but I could be mistaken; if that's the case, PlayOn is a suitable alternative. They just had a sale last week at 50% off, so I picked it up for $20.

I used a method which technically is against the Microsoft EULA, but works perfectly. You need http://us.codejunkies.com/Products/XB360-T...__EF000188.aspx and a memory card. What I did was take my first console and moved my profile to my memory card. Then I attached the memory card to this unit and made an image of it on my computer. After that I went ahead and moved my profile back to the original console, deleting it from the memory card. After that, I went back to my computer and loaded the memory card image back to the memory card, thereby giving me my profile again. Finally, go to the second 360, and move the profile to that one from the memory card, thereby deleting it again.

At that point, you have your one profile on both consoles at all times, without having to migrate back and forth. I've been doing this for roughly eight months now and haven't ran into a single problem. It's a pain, but it's better than having to carry your profile with you every time you want to turn on the console and pick up and play/watch. It takes roughly 10 minutes to do this all and the equipment, but it's worth it imho.

Good idea! :D

Well, I'm actually buying the Xbox cheap from someone that ruined the drive on it (they were trying to hack it) so I never plan on playing games on it and I won't have a warranty. It is one of the newer motherboards with HDMI, though. Swapping the hard drive back and forth is also very impractical. I literally just want something where I can stream my movies to and that's it.

I'd suggest just using a memory card.

Instead of all the warranty violation described above you can also directly "recover" your Live account to another machine from the logon screen with no fee and no hassle. Some game saves or statistics are associated with your profile, which is where you could run into weird situations.

Recovering an account can be a long process depending on the account. My neighbor's account took over 10 minutes to recover, mine roughly half that time. He's got more games under his belt than me, and it'd be much quicker swapping drives, another tedious process. So the memory card route seems like the best option.

I made the mistake of recovering my account when I went to a friend's house and boy did I regret it. Not only did it take long once, but it took long again when I had to revert it to my Xbox. That's definitely out. I guess I'll go with the memory card, which is kind of a pain because I have to actively remember to move it.

There is no warranty violation, lol. It is against the EULA if that's what you meant to say, but there is absolutely no way of microsoft knowing you did it. The profile itself is cloned, not the game information and you can only be logged into the same account once at a time. Each time you log onto live, it updates your profile with the latest information anyway, so both profiles will continue to be the exact same thing.

I'm sure something would happen if you went to MS and was like "hey I've been cloning my profile on my 360's" but other than that it does nothing to void any warranty what so ever.

Ironman, try my method, I assure you it's exactly what you are trying to achieve. If you want to take your profile to someone else's house though, I would suggest bringing it via memory card and not cloning it.

I may, and I appreciate the detailed description. I guess I'll start looking into the cost. I wish this would've been simpler. Also, with the situation I described of the Xbox I'm getting I would still be out of warranty so that doesn't concern me.

Ah, sorry, I misread your post.

I would prefer live account on Memory Stick than any other "brilliant" ideas. I did that for a while then just settled with one 360 now, actually I used to swap memory stick before but I couldn't access the videos, saves etc so I just started swapping HDD.

If you are purely using it for netflix etc then getting a memory card is the way to go.

If you are going to play many games aswell then swapping the hard drive is the best method.

I keep my primary 360 in my room for games, and use my roommate's 360 to stream video files to the TV in the living room. I usually just swap the HDD to the console I'm using, not too big a hassle.
