My Xbox Dies, and I have a ?

Recommended Posts

My XBox died today a red death of E71. Its no longer under warrenty (made in mid 2006), I was looking at getting a new XBox and just putting my HDD on it. Can I just put my HDD on it and have it work? Will my current controller work with it?

Aside form having HDMI standard now is there any other updates since the 2006 model?

Yes you can use the hard drive and controller fine.

If you buy a new console it'll most likely be a Jasper chipset, which means you'll have both a 65nm CPU and GPU inside. They run a lot cooler than the previous chipsets. Far less likely to have any RRoD issues with the better cooling and lower temps.

It'll also most likely come with a Lite-on dvd drive which is a lot quieter.

Plus there is a 256MB built onto the mobo for game saves, content etc.

I know you don't really want to fix it, but I think Microsoft only charges 100 dollars, which is cheaper than a new one. I imagine they would put the new chipset in there when they replace the motherboard.

Thanks, is there a "Made on" date on the box I should look for?

There's not a "manufacturer date" per se on the box itself, but there is a Lot Number.

It'll be in the format of something similar to: TEAM FDOU: 0843 = year 2008 and the 43rd week of the year.

You can find it on the barcode of the box. Anything higher than that is almost certainly a Lite-on Jasper 360.

You can check for the amp rating on the 360 if it is packaged well. There is a small gap on the box which lets you see the rear of the console. If you can see the amp rating it should be 12.5. If it is then it's 100% a jasper (Y)

I think all the arcade units are jaspers, mine was. If you have purcahsed online content, make sure to transfer the licenses to the new unit otherwise it will only be playabe when logged into XBL:

Buy an HDMI cable from Newegg for less than $20. Don't buy an overpriced cable from BestBuy or some other store with a 1000% markup

Do you mean your console has the "E74" error? If so depending where you live you can find someone to fix it for 30-40 bucks, atleast thats what I normally charge for E74 and RROD repairs, but I don't do mail ins anymore.

If you already did buy a new console I recommend trying to sell your old one on Craigslist. I check CL in my area all the time for xbox's with RROD or E74. Only takes about 5 minutes to repair and then you re-sell the box.

E71 is a dashboard error code which can be caused with a bad update. You can sometimes fix them by clearing the hard drive cache, but will most likely need to send it to MS to have it fixed.

What happened when it died? Were you installing an update?

Both my console and my roommate's have an actual manufacture date on the back of our 360s. 2005-12-28 and 2007-11-15.

he meant the box the 360 is inside of... he wanted to be able to tell which one to pick up while at the store to ensure its the most recent chipset type

You can't see the manufac date without taking it out the box. Obv retailers aren't gonna be happy with your raiding through boxes either :p

I'm not sure why you didn't read more into the XBOX support site, I just had my 360 Elite sent in with a 3-red ring of death error and they replaced it for free, it was outside the standard warranty.

"Q: My Console shows three flashing red lights on the Ring of Light. Am I covered for warranty service?

A: Microsoft covers repairs for the three lights flashing red on the Ring of Light for a period of three (3) years from the original purchase date of the console. If you are out of the initial three year warranty period, you can still receive console repair service from Microsoft for three flashing red lights for a fee."

https://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/repairfaqs.aspx

If you already bought a new console, you probably should've talked to XBOX support and made sure that it wasn't covered. Good luck.

Update, I got an Elite with the Falcon (FALON PUNCH!!!) chipset off of craigslist from a guy that got a PS3 for just 250, still looks new. I'm going to sell off my 360 when i get it back from MS.

Don't get too excited, the Falcon's may fail less, but they still fail as i've had to fix plenty of them using the standard procedures to fix a RROD. Really the only difference with the Falcon is your more likely to get the lovely E74 error.

Not trying to burst your bubble or anything, but the bottom line is MS should be ashamed that they haven't fixed this issue. Both the RROD and E74 are essentially the same issue, just at slightly different sections of the mobo, one causing the GPU to fail completely and not load at all (RROD), the other causing the GPU to fail partially (E74). Why MS insists on continuing to use their floating heatpipe design is beyond me and the xclamp system needs to be replaced with a more standard mechanism.

It's sad that I know this, but it's also sad that I have sent so many 360's back to MS that instead of bothering with them I started fixing them myself...and then my friends...and then people on CL....Quite frankly an experienced technician located in a metropolitan area, can with a minimal of training be making hundreds a week doing xbox repairs because paying 25-40 bucks is easier for some people than waiting 2+ weeks to get a return unit.
