Vice
Two Thousand and Never. Microsoft are so slow with Messenger updates for OS X that I stopped using it for lack of releases and switched to Adium. I don't know when 8.0 is out but I can bet you it will (has already been) a long long wait.

.Neo
Every Messenger for Mac release seems to be an at least 5-year project. And when they finally release it, it's most of the time a huge let down.
Phantom Helix
Anyone know? LOL, 7.0.2 came out in february it's gonna be a long time. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/emai...ngerformac.html

Agreed :( Adium unfortunately doesn't support video chat though, and that's something that's expected for Messenger 8.0 for Mac according to some sources. So while I like Adium more, I currently use aMSN myself.
Knife Party
Sad to see you guys are being left in the dark like this. Honestly not trolling, but I think MS really can't be bothered with OSX msn messenger atm
.Neo
Not sure if that's the reason. There is a huge competition going between all these IM-services. Yahoo! and others already put enough effort in their Mac OS X versions of their clients, I doubt Microsoft would be willing to give up its entire Mac user base. PyX
Well, the messenging on OS X is globally horrible. iChat seems like one of the best if not THE best chat client ever, but I cannot use my hotmail account on it.. and even then, I couldn't use camera and audio conference... what the hell is this! Handwriting on Windows is also a major cool feature for us engineers when we want to write equations to people... I couldn't care less about the Winks and all the other crap, but at least give us handwriting & video & audio!
Meek Wriggle
Sad to see you guys are being left in the dark like this. Honestly not trolling, but I think MS really can't be bothered with OSX msn messenger atm Why would they bother though? There's no profit in it for them. They will probably end up scrapping it like they did with IE for Mac. In fact, it's a wonder they haven't done so already. The same is also true of Yahoo Messenger for Mac. It's been in Beta for years even though they're on version 3 now. Yahoo does video though. Overall, IM on Mac is still in its infancy and doesn't seem to want to grow up. Apple's iChat is about the only full featured chat client but hardly anyone uses it. Adium sucks because it can't do video yet. If it did (or when it does) I will drop Yahoo and MSN and make the switch.

King Antonius
I'm sure there was a beta leaked ages ago. Was some dodgy chiunese copy, but worked fine. And had video chat. The only problem was the menus were all chinese, so couldnt be read.
Xerxes
I don't mean this as a mean thing, but perhaps there just isn't enough Mac people using messenger to make it worth while? I mean seriously.
+KibosJ Subscriber² Posted July 12, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted July 12, 2009 There is an 8.0 coming, I've played with the English beta. It does have video chat, and looks just as ugly as the original client :D lol.

"If you build it, they will come" Mac users (who number in the millions) won't use MSN if it isn't updated frequently. It is so far behind the Windows client its a joke. The Mac v7 is about the same technically as the Windows version 6 that came out many many years ago.
Petvas
Version 8 is coming but it is going to be a bit later this year. The Mac business unit works on another project with a higher priority: Entourage for Exchange Web Services...When it is done then they will allocate more ressources to MSN Messenger... The more likely reason is making your own product lag behind your own platform on purpose - to make the other platform more appealing to users. Of course there are alternatives to everything but since so many use Messenger , you're more or less "forced" to jump on the bandwagon.
bob_c_b
Since just about everyone has used AIM at one point or another I have never had an issue getting hooked up with friends in iChat. Even hardcore Windows users tend to be aware of Pidgin and thus have no issue with those not on MSN/Live Messenger. In fact I've had to convince some people to even get a Microsoft messenger product account because they didn't see the point. So it does depend who your friends are I guess, but I wouldn't call MS Messegner some kind of vice grip on the industry.
.Neo
But I wouldn't call MS Messegner some kind of vice grip on the industry. Thing is that there is a whole world out there beyond the US. In the Netherlands for example AIM is pretty much non-existent and Microsoft Live / MSN is by far the most dominant IM service. iChat won't do me much good because of that fact. Used to be all about the ICQ, but since 2004/2005, virtually everyone I knew switched to MSN/Windows Live.
