Playstation 3 Slim spotted in the wild?

So here's the deal.

I was walking around this underground marketplace in the Philippines, hoping to get a good deal for a PS3. Lo and behold out of nowhere i saw the PS3 slim. It looked EXACTLY like the rumored photos. I asked the guy and he said it was brand new and that our country had it first. I have a video and a few details.

What I know:

- It has a 120GB HDD.

- Two USB Ports

- The 'touch' button for eject and on seems to be gone, and there are now these random buttons.

- The ps icon is now white instead of colored.

- No more card reader

- PLAYSTATION 3 is gone, rather its PS3. It says this on the bottom as well for some reason.

- The guy was selling it with a Dualshock 3. Whether it is compatible is another matter.

- The guy was selling it for 20,000 pesos, which is roughly ?250, which is roughly $410

PS3 Slim Entering Production, Ready By July> - http://kotaku.com/5305021/ps3-slim-enterin...n-ready-by-july

It is real. It is a PS3 that's been cut down as much as physically possible without preventing the loss of playback of any existing PS3 title out there. It still has blu-ray, it still has wireless, it still has bluetooth and it still has gigabit ethernet. "OtherOS" support has been removed. You still get 2 USB ports. Hard drive sizes will be bigger, it will come in 120Gb and 250Gb flavours. It's still replaceable and will actually be slightly easier as it has been relocated to the front of the console. It will NOT have any "new" features, such as backwards compatibility or enhanced peripheral support. It's just a PS3, but slightly smaller and cheaper. The power supply is still internal, but a different power cable will be used. Rear ports are still the same: 1x HDMI, 1x Sony AV port, 1x Optical, 1x Ethernet. And of course a power port. Release date and official announcement are not final. Price is undetermined, but make no mistake, this is a "slimmed" PS3 in ever sense of the word. It's as cheap as can possibly be, so expect it to launch with a smaller price tag than what you're paying now in your respective territories.

Internally, several daughter boards have been removed, but all functionality is still there. This is due to a more advanced manufacturing process. It still uses a few extra boards, though, we're not quite at PSTwo levels yet. A Cheaper Blu-ray drive is being used. It wont be any slower, but expect to see similar issues that another competitor had a while ago. Touch-sensitive buttons on the front for power/eject are gone in favour of cheaper push buttons. It has a slightly different startup screen. Only slightly. It's about 50% smaller than current PS3s. It wont be called the "PS3 Slim". The PS1 "slim" and the PS2 "slim" were never officially called the "slim", either. In short: It's a smaller PS3, but that's it. No new features, no special hardware, just smaller and cheaper. And it wont have sex with you.

Cross-game chat is in the works as part of Firmware 3.0. It wont be out during the summer, but assuming all goes well, it will be out well before the holidays. Current timeframe places it around September, but it's still very much a WIP. If there are any major delays, that will slip and if there are very few delays at all, it might even arrive earlier, but don't bank on it as it is a lot more complicated than you might imagine. At this point, it's working quite well in the labs and supports several players at once. It's targeted to work with all past and future games that support ingame XMB, much like text chat. I'm not a betting man, but I wouldn't be surprised if the "slim" shipped with this firmware installed (that doesn't mean the slim will come first, remember).

Who said the 3000 wasn't being phased out? It will be and sooner than you realise. However, the PSP Go isn't what's replacing it. The 4000 is. And yes, it will have a UMD drive. And similar to the PS3 "slim", it's nothing to actually get excited about. Keep a very close eye on the hard drives shipped with newer PS3's. In a few months (or possibly sooner), something strange is going to start happening. There you have it, folks. That's it, I'm done, I'm outta here. If you have any more questions, you'll just have to wait like everyone else. This account is gone, never to be logged into again. You might see me in a few months time when I've got something even more awesome to tell you, but it wont be from this account and it probably wont even be on this site. Adios!

Looks like it could be real guys, separating all this from the other topic, think it's worth it's own topic rather than being scattered throughout a TGS rumour thread. All we need to know is the price...

That video shows nothing about the console :p And its low enough quality to be showing a black box for all I can see... He should've bought it and tried it out! :p

The top picture is the same source as the video, so whilst the video quality is awful what you see in the picture is what's in the video.

urgh it's so ugly :( really hope it's just a fake

Yup fat ftw, but if people want a $299 PS3 and keep claiming that's the price they'd buy it at Sony are obviously reducing costs as much as possible (removing "premium" fixings such as gloss/metal trims and touch sensitive buttons). At least it's keeping an internal power supply and slot loading, last thing you need is a rickety cdrom tray.

Although I think the size factor will be of importance to many, if the video is anything to try and judge by, it looks pretty damn thin compared to fat.

Oh wow, I'd take this over the current one. I might actually buy it just to have it instead (heck, I did that with the 360 Elite when it came out ). I hate glossy black.

Some more food for thought

I couldn't find any information about Sony operating any manufacturing plants in the Philippines, but if the PS3 is manufactured nearby at all (Malaysia is likely), I could see the following scenario occurring:

1. Test run of assembly process line for PS3 Slim is run at a Sony contractor plant in Malaysia.

2. A test run of 40 is made, and QC analyses the units.

3. A problem is discovered, the units are stripped for reusable parts and the remaining shells are sent for disposal.

4. Some wiseguy at the plant "disposes" of the incomplete PS3 Slims... by secretly taking a bin of them to his contact at the docks in Kuantan's seedy district.

5. For maybe 1,000 Malaysian Ringgit (~300 USD) this guy's contact takes the bin of incomplete PS3s and loads it on a boat destined for the Philippines.

6. The PS3s are sold to street vendors at a decent margin, which are then sold to extremely gullible tourists at a really big margin.

(In my honest opinion the PS3 Slim is real but it's not the final product. But I'm pretty positive that it's more then real. I'm quite sure it's not hard to get one this way especially over there!)

(Post-jack, but whatever. I went to that place many times.)

This seems to be in Greenhills in the Philippines.

The "black market" is on the older building. Usually third floor, but changes every now and then. You'll find fake electronics, pirated media that's packaged better than the real thing (kudos!), smuggled in consoles and handhelds (PSP was the rage those days), cellphones (even stolen ones!) and more stuff. In fact, that's where I first saw a PS3 phat.

I walked to the salesperson and asked how much was it. He replied PhP 45000 (a little below $1000) and I walked away. I'm not gonna be surprised if you find it there.

Liking the look of it, if this guy was selling it for ?250 and he was presumably trying to make a profit on it I would expect it'll market at around ?150-?200... this could really shake things up.

Depending on what they do with BC and the price point, I may have to sell my Original 60GB with Emotion Engine.

I wish that video was HD/longer though. The cameraman is a spazz.

I think it is most likely that this is a knock-off based on the leaked images. It has happened before. When the iPhone was announced by Apple knock-off models that looked identical were hitting the net within weeks. Same with the original PSP lots of those cheap knockoffs like P5P and PlaySPlay and PlaySP lol

if you're going to take a video, atleast hold the damn camera still.

jesus.

Brought to you exclusively by UltimatePlaystation.com, this is the first ever footage of the much anticipated PS3 Slim.

From the video's author "TheLastDestroyer":

"I'm sorry the video is very short and very low quality, but my phone is ancient and the memory is very low, but i hope you believe me when i say this is in no way a fabrication.

I found the PS3 slim at an underground market in the Philippines. They were selling it for roughly 250 pounds (converted from 20,000 PHP) with a Dualshock 3. More details at the website."

Dont think it would have mattered much, the source was an old camera phone.

I find it kind of hard to believe that Sony would release an updated PS3 without so much as a word about it.

Read some of my replies in here, Sony haven't released anything, word is they'll be announcing the Slim soon.

If this is real it's been stolen off production or something else, may still be a prototype if that's the case...

People are saying it's probably a cheap knock off, but if it was it would be on sale everywhere/ebay. They don't make 1/10/20 cheap knock off(s), they make hundreds/thousands.

you should have at least asked him to hook it up to a HDTV and played a game or at least booted it up to see if it worked... anyway, next time someone is in the phillipines, try it.

Pure coincidence but a friend of mine mentioned something about a new slimmer PS3 last week. He works for a promotional company and apparently they received a testunit.

Just look at the new PSP. Sony never said anything about that ahead of time. Then boom PSP v2

Personally I don't really follow any news relating the Playstation and Playstation Portable, so I wouldn't know how past releases were. It came up in a conversation because he just started working on a promotion booth for the new PS3.

I guess it's safe to say an updated PS3 will arrive soon.

I'm betting it's a fake, I can't see the video (cause I'm at work and it's blocked :p) but by the sound of it, it just screams fake. The removal of the touch buttons does seem plausible though, since they probably do add a bit to the cost and aren't really that necessary, as a normal switch would suffice really. Well that is my 2 cents, take with a grain of salt.

Actually for once, a lot of ammunition pointing towards it being real.

People get hung up on the why/how is it in a place like that, but that's actually the easiest part to understand. It's obviously bumped off a production line, and in those parts of the world where production is outsourced to, it's probably the easiest to get away with something like that. The news article on Kotaku clearly states the slims would be ready for sale/produced some point in July, but by ready for sale don't get that mixed up with on shelves, ready for sale as in manufactured and placed in a stock pile.

Plus other posters on the internet have already claimed PSPs and even the PS3 itself turned up early in such locations.

Where you could end up getting "scammed" is through buying a prototype design that might not be 100% final, but you can bet the insides are all legit, knock offs usually get sold for peanuts, they're knock offs to imitate design, not functionality.

Either way with this hitting the internet, these locations should become busy with punters trying to get ahold of/see if these are real. More proof should follow if this in fact real.

edit: Gametrailers staff member says it's real, more reliable than a regular user... but it's still GT.

Sony can't keep leaks.
