What Blu-ray player do you have?

Recommended Posts

1) PS3 / Laptop - HPG70-120ea

2) PS3 Plays games in HD / Lappy's built in screen means it plays blu-rays anywhere.

3) N/A & N/A

4) N/A & N/A

5) Alot but since that isn't the only reason I have them, Yes.

6) I'd buy them both again!

1) What model do you have?

PS3

2) What do you like about it?

should be future proof on all profiles (Sony knows better then to screw that up)

3) What don't you like about it?

HD audio codecs are PCM only... which does not turn the special light on my receiver indicating the HD audio

also HATE that the ps3 remote is bluetooth only... so it does not work with my Harmony (without additional add-ons)

4) Any issues, such as freezing, pixelation, etc?

Not once

5) How much did it cost you? Was it worth the money?

Paid $250 for my PS3 from a co-worker, tough to say if it was worth the price, I have yet to find a game that I needed a PS3 for but I dont think I would have paid more then $250 for a bluray player..

6) Anything else you'd like to add about it?

It does the job.

1) What model do you have?

LG BD370

2) What do you like about it?

Good quality, very responsive.

Nice featureset (plays also HD movies from USB drive (AVI, MKV, DivX, Xvid, etc)).

Upscaling from DVD's is very good (but of course you can see that it isn't a Blu-ray movie).

3) What don't you like about it?

Nothing.

4) Any issues, such as freezing, pixelation, etc?

No issues.

5) How much did it cost you? Was it worth the money?

€150. Yes.

6) Anything else you'd like to add about it?

Nice feature to watch youtube vids.

From what I'm reading here, it seems like the PS3 is definitely the best Blu-ray player out there. Not because it's the fastest or performs the best, but because it's issue-free. The is mainly due to the fact that Sony is ALWAYS keeping the PS3 up-to-date with firmware upgrades. Other standalone Blu-ray players are always behind on this.

I started a Got a new HDTV? Post it here last December and people seem to be having fun with it. So, I thought I'd start a similar thread where people can post what Blu-ray player they have.

So, tell us the following about your Blu-ray player:

1) What model do you have?

Had a PS3 recently sold it and bought an LG BD390

2) What do you like about it?

Just about everything, starts and loads fast, looks and sounds great, streaming Netflix support, etc...

3) What don't you like about it?

So far I have found nothing to dislike, maybe the door in front of the disk tray that seems slightly flimsy, but that is minor at best.

4) Any issues, such as freezing, pixelation, etc?

None after quite a few BDs and DVDs and lots of streaming Netflix. Note the D-Link DIR-655 users, upgrade your firmware to the latest or it will never get to Netflix/CinemaNow/YouTube or firmware updates.

5) How much did it cost you? Was it worth the money?

$345 on sale at Worst Buy, but since I sold my PS3 it basically cost me nothing as I did pretty well on eBay. Even at full retail it was completely worth it if you aren't after a game console feature as well.

6) Anything else you'd like to add about it?

Having tried several stand-alones in the past I can say all the issues of the early players are gone and now it comes down to what features you really want. The networking and streaming features of this players combined with excellent sound and video quality make it the player to beat this year (so far).

PS3 80gig machine :) Does the job and like others have said I also find myself watching films I only previous thought were ok just to see the extra detail and definition. Transformers and Ironman look amazing on it, as does Cars and Wall-E :)

The only problem I have with the PS3 is the Fan noise. It's loud. Since my PS3 is in a open space shelf, I can hear it quite easily.

Maybe this will get fixed with the PS3 Slim....

Same here. A lot of ok films turned out to be awesome films when watching them in HD.

I have the PS3 40GB I bought a year and half ago for $400, cheapest, upgradable Blu-Ray player on the market at the time. Plus I was able to play Ratchet and Clank on the PS3, the only games I own are those two. :)

Got a PS3 but I have exactly one Blu-ray movie and that's Casino Royale .. A movie which was sent to me for being among the first X amount of people to register on PSN.

Ditto.

My Sony BDP-S550 has been solid - no gremlins, no glitches, no bugs.. I've done one firmware update on it simply because it was available but didn't actually need it! :)

Same here. About a month ago, there was firmware upgrade available for my BD-P1600, which is supposed to fixed some compatibility issues, according to Samsung's website. I upgraded my firmware even though I didn't need to, only to realize that the upgrade fixed the long DVD layer change pause I was experiencing. Upgrading the firmware really does wonders your machine. :)

  • 1 month later...
The movie I was watching was ?The Grudge.? At first, I rented the disc and it pixilated once in the middle of the movie. I played the movie again and it played all the way through flawlessly. I returned the disc to Blockbuster Online. Then, I bought the movie on sale for $14.99 and watched the entire movie again. It still played flawlessly. Then yesterday, I watched it a fourth time and it pixilated at that EXACT same spot. So, I replayed the entire chapter again. No pixilation. Just to be sure, I replayed the scene again and still no problem.

At first, I thought it was probably a bug in the BD-P1600. But since this is the only movie that had the problem and it occurred at the exact same spot twice, it probably is a minor compatibility issue.

OK, Samsung just released a new firmware update for the BD-P1600 today and I updated my player. I did some testing and my issue seems to have been resolved. The movie didn't pixilate during my tests. It pixilated every time when I tested it before the update, so it seems like the new firmware update did the trick. So, my BD-P1600 is now 100% perfect...so far, at least.

Now, enough rambling on from me about my problems. Continue posting your BD playe:). :)
