Microsoft Spotify rival for Xbox 360?

Microsoft prepping music streaming service, Xbox tie-in possible

by Richard Mitchell

Speaking to the Telegraph, Peter Bale, executive producer of MSN, announced that Microsoft will launch a streaming music service "imminently" -- by the end of July, according to the Telegraph. Bale said the service will perform similarly to Spotify, a streaming music service which offers both an ad-supported listening option as well as a premium subscription with no ads (similar to Pandora in the US), though Microsoft has yet to reveal the business model of its service. Bale added that Microsoft is considering extending the service to the Xbox 360, though he divulged no concrete details.

Having already announced support for another music streaming service on Xbox, Last.fm, it's surprising to hear this announcement so soon after E3. It's not surprising, however, to think Microsoft would prefer to see its own service on the Xbox 360 as well. After all, the company has seen sizable success in renting movies and selling television shows on Xbox Live Marketplace, making music the next logical step.

With Microsoft set to unveil the Zune HD this fall, we wouldn't be surprised to see the new music service tying into the new Zune Video marketplace as well.

If they kept both (Last.FM and Microsofts service) it would be interesting to see them compete, or would it take a route like Netflix and the video marketplace in which i don't think they actively compete.

What I don't understand about this is that Microsoft already has a streaming music service with the Zune Marketplace. Granted, as it is right now, you need to pay $15/mo for it, but it's still there. I don't know why they would create a whole new one instead of just tweaking what they have.

Should be excellent either way though.

MS understand the power of social services, I wouldn't count something out like Hulu appearing down the line.

Possibly even a native YouTube application. Especially seeing the increase in games including replay features which allow you to upload videos. May as well offload the costs for storage to YT and save the money :p

I'm sure Google will love that though

Give me Hulu on the 360 and it would be complete, IMO.

That is ALL I want.. Screw everything else, and now that playon is broken, and doesn't look like it will be fixed, we are screwed on trying to get Hulu on our 360's

I wish I could use Spotify here in the US :(

Maybe this MS service will be as good as I hear Spotify is. Plus, we're getting Last.FM on 360 soon, so yay.

Install tunerfree in mediacenter and stream Hulu to the 360

You can, if you know someone in the UK or Sweden who can sign you up for an account, AND log in for you every couple of weeks.

You wouldn't even hear or see any ads on the free version ;)
