Major Nelson is the voice of Xbox Live in the US and most English speaking countries. He has a lot of reach, but due to language barriers he can?t be the Xbox spokesperson for, say, Taiwan. So, Taiwan is getting their own figurehead ? an Xbox Angel.

Microsoft?s Xbox division in Taiwan is holding an open casting call for the position . To join the search you have to be a loquacious female, over 18, and play an Xbox 360 for at least 360 minutes per week. Four semi-finalists will be selected by a panel of judges. Afterwards, the Xbox Angel will be chosen by the Internet on August 18.

The winner gets a role as an Xbox ambassador, which means promoting the Xbox 360 over social network services like Facebook, hosting Xbox Live events, and writing a column. On top of exposure, the Xbox Angel gets showered with gifts including an Xbox 360, three month Xbox Live subscription card, games, and a 35,000 NT stipend for three months of work (appx. $1090).

It?s too early to tell who the first Xbox Angel will be, but based on clicks ?Rabby? and ?Mini? are getting the most attention. ?Rabby? is on the left and ?Mini? is on the right.

The first one doesn't even look particularly Chinese...I'm skeptical.

remember that this is Taiwan... the same place that those 'Made In Taiwan' gadgets come from because everything's cheaper over there

imho this feels like another form of outsourcing...

I think a lot of it has to do with the desire a lot of people have to do business with someone that is "local" to a degree. I mean, remember when the first XBox came out and no one in Japan would touch it because it wasn't Japanese? Perhaps this is Microsoft's plan to try to make these other countries more comfortable with their brand? It might make sense given the social differences between our culture and theirs as well.

I remember some time ago back when I still listened to the Major Nelson podcast that he had been in contact with the Xbox Japan community manager. They have several levels of this, they have their marketing people, then community managers, and then they have community members that help out other users (I forget what they call these people). This is falling somewhere among all those, a community member who will also be a public face for the product. It's not a bad idea.

I agree. I think that culturally we don't really understand eachother, so the more stuff like this that Microsoft does the more market penetration they're likely to have.
