Microsoft: Natal isn't the only new hardware coming for Xbox

Recommended Posts

Thursday 16-Jul-2009 11:13 AM Project Natal could be just the beginning

In an not-yet-online interview with trade magazine MCV, Phil Spencer has said that Project Natal is just one of several planned hardware innovations that could replace the need for a next-generation Xbox 360.

When talking about Natal, he states, "It's not about trying to sell consumers a new piece of hardware at the wrong time, it's about evolving the platform continuously. And we are going to find things, like Natal, that are hardware related to also do that."

Could this mean that Microsoft has another peripheral in the works? It's pure speculation at the moment, but Microsoft has always spent big on research and development so there's doubtless more stuff in the labs it can bring out.

Consider me interested MS :o

Seen this posted elsewhere, there's reading between the lines and then there's just making **** up.

He's just saying that sometimes when you're evolving a platform, the stuff you find to evolve it with is hardware - like natal - and not just software. Nothing said to do with new hardware.

"It's not about trying to sell consumers a new piece of hardware at the wrong time, it's about evolving the platform continuously. And we are going to find things, like Natal, that are hardware related to also do that."

That whole sentence is about how Natal will evolve the current hardware, OXM need to learn how to read and how commas work.

It reads fine to me, they are only using Natal as an example of how MS are extending the life of their console with new hardware. Obviously he hasn't mentioned anything which is in the works or maybe they haven't found the next device yet.

I don't have any doubts we'll see MS release something else in maybe 2 years time to extend the life of the 360 more. Hell, none of seen Natal coming along.

Yes, so OXM are making **** up for a headline.

Please point to me where MS confirm "Natal isn't the only hardware coming for Xbox". You read an article like that expecting MS to say "we're working on new hardware", and they aren't, they're talking about how natal will evolve the current hardware, the current hardware being an xbox 360.

They really need to add some USB powered adult entertainment devices to PS3/360. Think of the markets on those 'things'!

But of course you're not going to do that, it's counter intuitive to your own interests and business.

"And we are going to find things, like Natal, that are hardware related to also do that."

That to me pretty much confirms they already have R&D going on for the next device once Natal has been released. We won't hear anything solid on it until a good bit after Natal launches.

@Phoenix, look up Rez and PS2, and you're sorted.

It reads the same to me as it does to DM. He was using Natal as an example of the things they can do to advance the Xbox 360 without creating a whole new console and that they plan to keep looking into new hardware like Natal to do so.

I'm not sure why you're so against that.

No it's not

They're saying we're going to see something like Natal evolve our current hardware, it's not just going to be software or new hardware that does it.

"It's not about trying to sell consumers a new piece of hardware at the wrong time, it's about evolving the platform continuously. And we are going to find things, like Natal, that are hardware related to also do that."

That is saying it's not about trying to offload new hardware, say a new xbox, too early, it's about evolving your current hardware with new hardware like Natal.

AB, you're just wrong, and being ridiculous about it.

Best argument I've read in a while :p

I expected to see confirmation of new hardware, not OXM making up nonsense from a misquote.

Could this mean that Microsoft has another peripheral in the works? It's pure speculation at the moment, but Microsoft has always spent big on research and development so there's doubtless more stuff in the labs it can bring out.

Even that reads as "we're just pulling this headline out of our ass".

I'm attacking OXM's journalism here not Microsoft or the Xbox or Natal, I have no idea why everyone is so defensive.

AB you're seriously making my head hurt now. I honestly can't see what you're reading into here.

Like I said, even if they had another piece of hardware sitting on the sidelines just waiting until Natal launched, there wouldn't be a confirmation any time soon.

First off, that wasn't an argument, just a general statement. You are wrong, and you are being ridiculous about it. That's just telling it like it is.

Second, it means they read the comment as any normal person would read it based on basic English grammar structure and subtle meanings.

"And we are going to find things, like Natal, that are hardware related to also do that."

Look, even if you say he's referring directly to Natal, which this sentence doesn't imply, he still used the word 'things'. That happens to be plural, so that right there points to there being more than just Natal coming in the 360's future.

You're being as defensive as we are here, and you also apparently don't want to think that MS has more innovations up its sleeve. I don't know why.

Yes, things, like Natal. He's referring to Natal as a "thing".

That is not confirmation of NEW hardware being worked on for the Xbox 360 which OXM are trying to run as a headline. They're just saying they're exploring avenues for expanding the 360 like Natal, not that there are other things coming hardware wise that are similar to Natal.

Some of you should probably re-read the title

Microsoft: Natal isn't the only new hardware coming for Xbox

And find me where above in that quote new hardware is confirmed for the Xbox.

You're being as defensive as we are here, and you also apparently don't want to think that MS has more innovations up its sleeve. I don't know why.

Okay so now we get to the bottom of things  Of course MS have more innovations up their sleeves, I thought this was confirmation of that, not OXM running a stretched headline.

Maybe they are saying Natal is the new hardware, and using it as an example of new hardware evolving a system, NOT that they are making a continuous effort of new hardware to improve the system. There are certainty too different ways of reading this.

It seems to me that he was talking in a broader sense about how they would evolve the console rather than about anything specific. But i don't doubt they're working on other things, i just don't think this interview is to be taken as some kind of reveal.

I don't think we should be reading too much into this one sentence.

Neither do any of us. It does seem to clearly state that they are working on other things besides Natal for the 360.

Bingo, which is why I'm asking how OXM manage to read that one sentence and run an article/headline of new hardware coming for the Xbox.

Maybe because "that are hardware related to also do that"? They didn't use "software related" in their quote.

The specifically used hardware related; which only leaves that they're working on hardware (like Natal) to evolve their platform.

Err Natal has new hardware, I hope you know that? so things like Natal which are hardware related means exactly that. That they are working on other hardware things besides Natal.

why is it so difficult with you? :p
