Comic Book Guy
An internal EA interview, and subsequent follow-up, pertaining to the recently-announced Command & Conquer 4, confirms that the game will require an always-on Internet connection so that the single-player campaign can function properly: As of right now, you need to be online all the time to play C&C 4. This is primarily due to our "player progression" feature so everything can be tracked. C&C 4 is not an MMO in the sense of World of Warcraft, but conceptually it has similar principles for being online all the time. While some may be taken aback by this, we've been testing this feature internally with all of our world-wide markets. We wanted to make sure it wouldn't take away any significant market or territory from playing the game. We have not found or seen any results that have made us think otherwise. You won't need a fast connection, in fact, you could be on age-old dial-up, and have the same single player experience as everyone else. Online all the time won't cause lag for single-player. We've also heavily worked on the online infrastructure such that people with slower connections will not lag other players with faster connections in Multiplayer. What we are doing for multiplayer for the game and with our infrastructure for this game is unlike any we've produced before and I think you will finally see the culmination of a lot of key leanings from past projects in C&C 4, in this respect. scokem
This had better not be true. Granted, yes I have a permanent connection on my PC and my laptop at home, but if I'm out and I'm playing on my laptop, there's no guarantee of having a connection :( I can't understand why for a single player experience you'd go for this solution. If "player progression" tracking is their argument, can't it just store the data if you're not online and send it the next time you play and have a connection? To add to this I just moved house and for the past three weeks have not had an internet connection, hopefully should have it sorted out on monday or tuesday, I would be more than slightly peeved to find that I couldn't play a single-player campaign because I didn't have an active internet connection. I don't agree with this method, and also I can't understand why they don't store statistics and send them when a connection is active.
MistaT40
Still trying to figure this out........guess that way also prevents people from pirating and being able to play it (even in single player)?
+LogicalApex MVC Posted July 16, 2009 MVC Share Posted July 16, 2009 EA's DRM is just getting insane. It is a good thing I no longer buy their titles.
furyshinobi
EA's DRM is just getting insane. It is a good thing I no longer buy their titles. Well I do (in particular Mirror's Edge and Mass Effect and looking forward to Mass Effect 2 and Mirror's Edge 2). Personally, imo, this is better than the other DRMs EA shipped with their previous games...
Ash
Ya, and the fact they are disguising it as a feature is even worse. What about privacy, what if I don't want my gaming stats recorded? I may suck at the game, I wouldn't want people to know that though. Feature... sure, I believe them, honestly I do.

I understand your concerns and personally, I find this move to be pretty stupid. Shame too since they first announced that it would be PC only, which certainly made it somewhat more appealing. Hopefully, maybe they'll add an offline SP and online SP, where anything you did on offline SP wouldn't count towards your online statistics and such. I think this idea would solve the issue at hand for the most part. Storing the data with statistics and various other information on your computer wouldn't really make sense. It would simply mean people would tamper with the data to make themselves look better. Think back to the days of Diablo II with Open Battle.net being full of nothing but modified characters with hacked up equips, charms, etc. This was because in Open Battle.net, you could play your singleplayer characters which are stored locally on your machine. I can't imagine what kind of outrage would break out if people were able to hack up their achievements/statistics in World of Warcraft...
Tharp Daddy
I don't think it will be pure stat tracking personally, it could even be stuff like a ever changing campaign based on how other player's are doing for their respective factions or such. fhpuqrgrpgvirzhpujbj
Think of it this way, someone will make a patch for this pretty quick. Also, you could use a firewall to see where it tries to connect, then use hostfile to re-route it back to your computer.
boogerjones
guess that way also prevents people from pirating and being able to play it (even in single player)?Guess again. The game will be pirated just as much as if they didn't require an always-on internet connection.
nvllsvm
I really wish I could support them, but this is utter bull crap. I wonder what would happen if they released it without some asinine DRM. *Gasp* Maybe people would be more inclined to buy it! No wonder PC gaming is failing.... Mordkanin
Still trying to figure this out........guess that way also prevents people from pirating and being able to play it (even in single player)? For about a day until someone release a patch that gets around it. I love C&C. This would blow. My laptop, which I do play games on when I'm not on my desktop, does not have a guaranteed internet connection wherever I am.
