Could my X360 have the RROD of legend?

Recommended Posts

Been using my xbox 360 fine for a while but today I turned it on, in fact just to remove the disk not play it and I noticed some red lights flashing in my direction. From what it seems, it looked like all 4 were flashing, but after a closer look it seems that the top left and both bottom lights are flashing. The reason I'm posting is I've seen videos where a different 3 lights were flashing. Does it matter which 3 flash? Or is it, if any 3 flash, you're ****ed?

The quadrants change depending on the position of the 360, but it's always the same three.

The top left, bottom left and bottom right. So yes you have the RRoD.

I feel like I can join the RRoD club now. I can get it repaired for ?45 (since It is out of warranty). Is that a good price? Or should I bite the bullet the try these home-made remedies?

I cooked mine in a bunch of towels for like half an hour...It did work again after that but only for about 20 minutes lol.

I sent mine back and lucky enough it was just inside the three years warranty..

They sent a replacement back and seems to be all good...

?45 isn't a lot at all, but you're near enough half way to spending the money on a new Jasper.

The RRoD fix is very easy. Basically just take the console apart (plenty of guides on this), remove the x-clamps and replace them with some washers and screws.

ps: ?45 doesn't seem that bad...

:woot: iirc didn't your PS3 die too?

Well done for linking to one of the very few cases of repeated PS3 issues. Would you like me to do the same for RRoD? I don't really want to if you don't mind...I'd be here a while

And yep it did. 10 months out of warranty and it was replaced free of charge within 2 weeks with a lovely 60GB (including backwards compatibility) :) Fortunately for Sony, they haven't had to set aside $1billion for these sorts of situations ;) All irrelevant of course. Anyway...

To the OP, perhaps the X-clamp + new washers/screws is the better option.

^ I think so. Money is tight for alot of people at the moment and for me, I would rather pay ?5 on a kit (which I just have) than ?45 for some guy to sort it out. We shall see how it goes.

It's interesting though, you always think, this will never happen to me. But RRoD's always puzzle me. I could understand if I had left my machine on for days on end. But it worked fine on Monday, has been off since then and now today it decides to **** up instantly without any heating up required. Son of a bitch.

Very few cases my ass.

At least MS set aside money for repairs. Sony's solution is to rebuy the console (ala PS2 DVD drive issues).

:bounce: going round in circles is fun. It's like 2005 all over again with you Bhav :)

But yes, follow my advice if money is tight NORR, and if you need any help feel free to ask or PM me.

All new and existing owners have a 3 year warranty from the day they bought the console (or is it manufac date? I can't remember). They also provide a 1 year repair warranty as well.

Tonight I removed the heatsinks and replaced the x-clamps with bolts and washers, as per internet guides. Pack cost me ?5 off eBay and took me an hour. Worked like a charm, been playing battlefield 1943:DD and loving it. Double the pleasure.

Mine broke the other day meh! Since its still in warranty im sending it off to Microsoft. UPS are supposed to be picking it up today. Does anyone know if they actually fix the problem or bodge it, so it happens again?

Varies. Chances are good that they'll send you a new unit (so you'll need to use license recovery on xbox.com to move your downloadable licenses to the new system, or your games will only work when you're logged in and authenticated to live).

Well hopefully I will get a new one! UPS just picked it up about 10 mins ago. So I guess I'm gonna have to wait about 3 weeks now meh. Mine was only just over a year old, and wasn't really used excessively. Never mind, just shows you how poorly built they are!

There were definitely problems with the units produced in the first year, particularly certain lots produced by one of the assembly plants that were in the first shipments. But I do think some of it is regional issues with the quality of power that people are getting from their wall sockets. Like any other piece of expensive electronics, 360s should be connected to a source of clean power (battery backed-up UPS) instead of just a surge protector. Brownouts are bad, and some places are hit with them hard fast and continuously.

Well Microsoft say that they have shipped the console back already! Which is good new I suppose, just waiting for it to appear on the UPS tracker :)
