Media Sharing....

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I have just about had it tonight! I have been trying to get my 360 connected to my laptop to share my music, videos etc. I have tried everything I know how to get this working and I am just out of ideas. Here is my setup:

Cable Modem-->NETGEAR WNR854T (Wireless N router)-->Switch-->Switch-->360

Now I am connecting my laptop via a wireless N connection and works nicely, the 360 is connected via ethernet to my second switch. I have had this setup work before without a issue and I have not changed any settings on my network. I have tried WMP 11, Zune, and WMC and nothing is working at all, I have forwarded every port that is required and enabled all services that are needed.

The only security software I have is the default windows firewall and Norton 2009 gaming edition, I have disabled both and still no connection. My laptop can see the Xbox 360 no problem but the 360 will not, when trying to setup WMC I get a "Your console didn't obtain an IP address from your DHCP server." Well I can connect to XBL without issue and play games and do parties so I know that's BS.

The laptop is running Vista Ultimate 32-bit and again I have come to a dead end and cannot figure out anything else to try and hope you guys can help me. I have posted this in the Gaming section under the Microsoft area as well as the networking forum.

If I have left and thing out that you need to know please let me know and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

No one???

Get your Laptop's Ip configuration by doing

ipconfig /all

in a cmd.exe window.

On your Xbox set your IP configuration manually (for testing) so for example:

Laptop:

IP: 192.168.0.2

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 192.168.0.1

Xbox 360 manual config:

IP: 192.168.0.3

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 192.168.0.1

Your Xbox should just use the next free IP address that your Router/DNS should provide by Auto DHCP. Check on your router admin config to see if it now sees the Xbox 360 in it's Attached Devices, if so then Reserve the IP address and set it to Auto DHCP (With DNS left manually configured). If it's not showing then double check that you've allowed enough free IP addresses in your DHCP range on the router.

With that hopefully working correctly, on your laptop make sure that you have WMP11 network sharing service enabled and that you allow your Xbox 360 to connect to view your content:

Would advise making sure that you have "All ratings & Content" available to share or you'll just get 5 star rated content shared.

If all else fails, I'd check your switches or swap their daisy chain order.

Thanks for the reply, I actually already had that done. I tried connecting another laptop to see if it would share and it worked without a problem. I went through and made sure I had the same settings and services enable as that laptop and nothing worked. After troubleshooting this for 6 hours I determined that there was something coruppted within windows, I just completed a fresh install of Vista Ultimate and currently installing windows updates. I needed to do a fresh install anyways so wy not. I am wondering if SP2 had anything to do with it, the laptop I tested with still had SP1 installed.

I will post my findings after I get everything else.

A good site for this is thegreenbutton.com (All about Windows Media Center + extenders) Not quite the answer you want, but I hope it helps.

Hey guy after the reinstall of windows everything works like a charm ;) The only thing I can figure is that either SP2 screwed something up or a service or program got corrupted... Thanks for the tips though :D
