Windows 7 RTM Discussion

Recommended Posts

Keywords are evolutionary and major effort.

If the fact that the Server counterpart is just called Server 2008 R2 isn't enough to convince you, then I give up.

+100

for me 6.1 is vista R2 as far as kernel is concerned.

Nothing else will get released. MS is working on languages and that's about it. English is not my first language, but running Windows or any other OS in other language then Engilsh is absolutely retarded cause there is no way to translate certain things and not to lose real meaning of it.

Windows 2000 = 5.0

Windows XP = 5.1

Was Windows XP Windows 2000 R2 for you?

Windows 7 ist Windows NT 7.0.

Sorry to disappoint you but Windows Vista Server edition is Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 Server edition is Windows Server 2008 R2...

Windows XP was basically Windows 2000 with a more average-consumer-friendly frond-end slapped on. The changes weren't that massive between the two. It was revolutionary in the sense that NT finally came to the consumer market.

True. It wasn't much an improvement over Win2000 but it was the biggest ever improvement in the original (non NT) line of Windows (1.01, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, Win95, 98, Me), but I will add that there was some improvements in XP over 2000 other than the front-end, not too big ones but still improvements.

i think by now you must have got your answer in the upper post but to add, yes XP was evolutionary with minor upgrade to the kernel itself. i think you need to understand the difference between kernel & os. what i am taking about is NT version & not the os itself. from vista to win7 kernel is largely the same with minor upgrade but as a whole OS has other changes as well beside kernel.

and as far as microsoft post explaining why it is 6.1is concerned it itself says that it is a "evolutionary" step with "major effort". this doesn't mean the major effort results in major changes as well. vista itself was so bloated that it needed major effort to get the performance as in win7. application compatibility excuse is just a marketing gimmick coz they cant call windows 7 as vista R2 just like that with server 2008 coz of obvious reasons. if kernel would have actually got some major uplift than they could have named server edition as server 2009 or anything they like. that could actually get better market reputation of bringing a new server edition as well insead of just a R2.

:argh:

There should be a separate thread for bitching about version numbers. Everyone is just running in circles saying the same things over and over and over. The official statement is out there and nothing anyone else says can change it, even if it doesn't make sense to some people.

Gendo: Can't say RTM or not RTM anymore. the RTM date is out, the schedule is out, so there's really no point in debating about the RTM anymore. Some of you guys are just incapable of waiting.

Accorinding to the blog post, OEMS will get Win 7 two days after the RTM. To meet the 24th, that would mean the RTM is today. It doesn't make sense that they would get it two days after the 24th, that would make it a Sunday.

From other threads; the actual wording was "within 2 days" and the RTM is only officially announced once all of the language packs are finished. if you look at that screenie it's just the English RTM that will be getting to OEM's on Friday. That's also the only build I'm interested in, and the build number will always stay the same so hopefully it'll come out.

My guess it that it will end up being:

Windows 7

Version 6.1.7600.17000

Why? is it 'logical' that a nice round number would be the Final ?

My guess it that it will end up being:

Windows 7

Version 6.1.7600.17000

If they decided to recompile 7600.16385. They would have to re-distro to all the MS Partners, then re-vote on the code. Since it would then be a different build.

That will not happen. It's done.. and the RTM build is 7600.16385..

Yes, today was the big day according to even Paul Thurrott's FAQ.

"Q: When will the final version of Windows 7 ship?

A: Microsoft finalized Windows 7 on July 22, 2009 and will make it available to the public on October 22, 2009 via new PCs and at retail. However, different customer types will be able to get Windows 7 before that date. See my article, Windows 7 Availability, for details."
