EmmanuelM
I've been a long time PC user and I was thinking about going to the dark side... :D Anyway, I've been looking at thin and light notebooks and the MacBook Air seems to fit the bill. However, I have one burning question. Can the Air handle heavy browsing using Firefox? When I mean heavy, I mean heavy. Like about 20-30 tabs open at once with me using most of them at the same time. A couple of them with YouTube and Hulu open, and handling my E-mail (presumably I'll use Mail.app, but I might go with Thunderbird or straight Gmail.), and using Word (or Pages) all at once. I suppose I could stick to less tabs, but... Well, does anyone have issues with that on their Air. I've also been eyeing the first gen one at the Apple refurbished section. It's like $999, which looks like an excellent deal.
shihchiun
It definitely shouldn't have issues.
EmmanuelM
Oh, good! People always keep telling me different things and I have been thinking the same thing. I like to consider myself a heavy computer user, but I'm not all that demanding, I mainly use the web, though on some computers I've used, they would go "Bleh!" and fail. It makes you wonder... cabron
The new 13inch MacBook Pro is almost the same price.
EmmanuelM
The new 13inch MacBook Pro is almost the same price. Hmm... I've been thinking that. I would like to carry it a bit more. But, I guess I might just end up going with the MBP. They're are both pretty stylish.

Simon Veteran Posted July 19, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 19, 2009 I would highly recommend the 13" MacBook Pro. It's thicker, yes, but how thin do you really need your computer to be, and how much are you willing to sacrifice to get a thin computer? That's what it ultimately comes down to. Well, if you're using fairly modern machines that may have more to do with Firefox than the hardware. I use Firefox much as you do (tons of tabs open all the time) and I wind up having to restart the browser every few hours when its memory usage gets too crazy and bogs down my machine (I'm running a 2.4 Ghz quad core machine with 2 GB of RAM - it's that bad). MasterC
Just shove more RAM in there and you won't have a problem. :p Just don't buy it from Apple - they overcharge for it. ;)
Brian M. Veteran Posted July 21, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 21, 2009 The one thing that really put me off of the air was the mono speaker. I like to listen to music and watch DVDs, and mono is a no go for me.

The air is mono? I didn't know that! Glad I didn't get one, cause that would bother me to no end.

Yep a little one right under the down arrow key. Horrible sound quality if you ask me. I had one for about 3 months and disliked it.

I've played with an Air at an Apple store before, but I've never bothered to play music on it. Is it tinny or just generally bad quality?

It's ok quality, just don't expect to pump out alot of volume.

Is it tinny or just generally bad quality? Compared to the MacBook it is garbage. I was very disappointed in mine when I was using it. The speaker is very tiny. And like I said above it is right under the arrow keys so if you are typing your hand will probably cover the sound up a bit as well
