Neoauld
Warcraft 3 is one of the best strategy games ive ever played its old but good, and in multiplayer the map making system is so advanced you can virtually do anything Theres a popular map called DOTA that gets ppl hooked, its about all i play in war3 now if you want pure strategy War3 is good for that to Also the Command and Conquer games are good, but i could never really get into them
Tharp Daddy
As a player of Empire: Total War, i can tell you it's probably the grandest RTS i've ever played, it's just absolutely amazing - get it, as soon as you can. It's about 15-20 gig though, it's a HUGE game - TOP rts of all time. WarCraft 3 is also a amazing RTS (mostly for custom games), but it's also older so the graphics are not very high quality. If you can't get Empire: Total War (get it), then get something like Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3, it has it's flaws but it's a fun game. Empire: Total war is the only game that i've found myself talking with friends about though, ill actually sit there and start working out strategies like "well, Russia is becoming aggressive, i think i may attempt to befriend Austria but that could cause issues with Poland-Lithuania and i need to watch my Ottoman Empire front" it's just a amazing game. odw
Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, Kane's Wrath, and Red Alert 3.. seem to be my favorites. I am literally addicted to Tiberium Wars, Multiplayer is defiantly the best. The campaigns are alright, Seems that there are still quite a few bugs. CC3 USERNAME: pwnosaur. kazuyette
I don't if it would fit your needs, but Anno 1404 is a very fine game too.
Dead_Monkey
I keep wanting to like RTSes, and trying them over and over (I have no less than five RTSes on my shelf at the moment), but the only one I really liked in the last few years was BFME. I intend to get to Red Alert 3 soon, so maybe that will change.

Tharp Daddy
It honestly depends on what type of RTS you want, if you want to do long campaigns with alot of planning, strategy and diplomacy, then go Empire: Total war. If you want all out chaos with battles of units, then go with a command and conquer. Or get both for the best experience of both worlds.

Andre S. Veteran Posted July 21, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 21, 2009 how is Empire Total War? It has got very awesome reviews. It is awesome, but it has beefy system requirements. It's closely follows the Total War formula that made Medieval II and Rome awesome games too, so I'd choose based on which epoch appeals the most to you (and whether your computer is capable enough).Word of warning: Total War is not an RTS, it's turned-based. There are realistic real-time battles, which have little to do with the kind of skirmishes you see in most RTSes, but they can also be resolved automatically, allowing for a pure turn-based strategy game like Civilization. Well, it's a RTS and a Turn Based (the turns are very quick for the computer, so you only have to wait about 10 seconds before your next turn - it simulates how much you can get done in 1 day/month/year), during the unit battles you actively control and fight with them, so that part is very RTS, but it's different during those battles from most: 1. the battles are difficult (imo) 2. Your units rank up after battles to allow them to get special stats, more morale and such. 3. Conditions come into play, if the units have been in the battle for a long time they may become fatigued, or they will be more likely to retreat if their commander is killed, and such. Once you get the hang of the game it plays out beautifully to be a pure amazing game, it's like a RTS version of Risk - and the reviews for it were spot on. Andre S. Veteran Posted July 21, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 21, 2009 Well, it's a RTS and a Turn BasedWell that's just debating semantics. I still say Total War is fundamentally turn-based: - There's an "end turn" button - You can take as much time as you want before pressing it - Nobody's going to play before you're done - Everything takes places between "end turn button" presses So... that's a turn-based strategy game. I'm not denying the real-time aspect, there are real-time battles, I said it, but they take place within turns and are always optional so the pace of the game is fundamentally turn-based. Besides, these battles are of a scale and depth that would be unfeasible in an RTS. Also, Total War features none of the traditional RTS gameplay elements: resource gathering, base building, scouting and rushing your adversary, clicking 300 times per minute, etc.

Yes, the campaign(s) are focused on both turn-based and RTS but calling the overall game turn-based strategy is perhaps pushing it, because this game IS all about the real time battles and the turn based is just the best way to set up the campaign in the spirit of how they want it. trag3dy
Surprised no one has mentioned Company of Heroes or World in Conflict and the expansions that go with them. While they aren't you're typical RTS game with collecting resource I think they're still considered RTS games. There is also Dawn of War 2 that takes the idea those 2 games started with even further. I have only played the single-player portion of the game and always felt like the meat was the campaigns, which are essentially turn-based. I suppose then the game can be experienced as both a turn-based and an RTS. Still, the term "RTS" seems misleading since this game has nothing to do with classic RTSes such as Starcraft, Warcraft, C&C, Age of Empires, etc.

You could play the game and experience a lot of it and never see the turn-based part or you can go through the entire campaign without experiencing the real-time strategy element. So it's a hybrid? Ilgauskas
Hello everyone, I just would like to ask for an RTS recommendation. However, I didn't want to create a new topic. So, what I really need is: - No limits on tactical options. I hate offensive minded games such as Company of Heroes or World in Conflict where a defensive player has a smaller chance to win as the game engine suits them better. - Quite active online community. I love playing with other players online. - I don't care about the graphics nor the game setting (Sci-fi, historical, fantasy) Thanks for suggestions. I will once again say Men of War, I'm really plugging the game but it is really the most underrated and brilliant game in years - Most of my friends started playing it and are loving it to death. The online community is active there's just a lot of foreigners, ie non-English speakers. Else the game is brilliant, realistic, tactical and favours whoever has the best tactic and battle-plan no matter what you do, attacking or defending.
