+Mystic MVC Posted July 21, 2009 MVC Share Posted July 21, 2009 I still find myself playing Rise of Nations a lot . It was GOTY all over in 2001 (back when that meant something) and that speaks miles about the game. It was beyond AOE but felt similar. I can't really describe the game without thinking, "must play it now". :p
Victor Rambo
Thanks guys No problem if Total War is turn based. :)
Andre S. Veteran Posted July 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 22, 2009 So it's a hybrid? You could say that... I'd say: "It's just Total War. Enough talking, go try it!" :p
trag3dy
To bad you missed the deal they had for it on steam a week or two ago for 50% off. I picked it up then and I liked it more than I thought I would.
red.
I don't think Sins of a Solar Empire has been mentioned yet. It's also a fantastic RTS game and got a lot of good reviews.
chevyordeath
I love strategy games, RTS or turn based.. they are my favorite.. I will back up some other users with what they have said; Anno: 1404 is quite good. So is any Total War game.. Empire, Rome, Medieval 2. Total War games are a combination of turn based and RTS. All the battles are real time though, I think you would enjoy them. Empire is the newest, I like it a lot and own it personaly.. but I would have to say that I enjoy Rome and Medieval 2 quite a bit more. I see Sins of a Solar Empire has been mentioned, also a lot of fun, the game can kinda' start out slow, but it really picks up. Supreme Commander just may be the grandest RTS of them all. A lot of fun. A single game can take hours, and the battles just get absolutely massive. A must play. I am really looking forward to Supreme Commander 2. Fagutish
Generals + Zero Hour My favorite RTS Red Alert comes very close. Total War series. Rise of Nations. World in Conflict. but you didn't like that.

It's also a fantastic RTS game and got a lot of good reviews.Oh yeah, +1 for Sins of a Solar Empire, and buy it with the expansion, Entrenchement, it adds a substantial layer of depth and polish. My only reserve towards SoaSE is the awful voice acting throughout, from the opening cinematic to the acknowledgements of individual units. Especially the Vasari: every unit is voiced by the same guy with a slightly different tone, and it's a really irritating creepy voice. You might as well disable them. Tharp Daddy
I don't think Sins of a Solar Empire has been mentioned yet. It's also a fantastic RTS game and got a lot of good reviews. Sins is fun, but for a 3 axis game it is damn hard. I never really got good at it. Empire: Total War is mor eof a hybrid, i agree. The game requires planning, strategy, and such - once you enter the battles themselves it's all RTS - the RTS part is also deep; managing fatigue, cover systems, ambushes, attack patterns, etc. Such as, quoted from the tips part of the site, "If you are looking for a advantage form multiple companies of your units into a horseshoe around the enemy if you get a chance, with a wider attacking radius your men can take down more of them quickly while their attacks will be spread thin." red.
Did you play all of them already :p I can't think of any other games. How about Homeworld 2?
SkyDX
Supreme Commander all the way, I never played an intense RTS like this before. Otherwise I found Sins of a Solar Empire quite entertaining.
Nebula2020
Dark Reign - an oldie but a goodie Agreed. And Rise of the Shadowhand expansion. Did anyone mention Starcraft yet? Dated graphics but still plays well. Get in practice for Starcraft 2 when it comes out. :)
Ryster
Supreme Commander, I concur. Great game, the scale of some of the maps is immense, and the tactical zooming is revolutionary. Going back to other RTS games now just seems very restrictive in terms of camera control. I also enjoyed Homeworld 2, it's just very old now... maybe try it with the Complex mod which improves the AI and adds a bucketload of new ships and features. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted August 30, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 30, 2009 I'm a huge RTS game junkie and I've played many; however, there are only two games that keep me "addicted". Those games are StarCraft/*Brood War and Sins of a Solar Empire/*Entrenchment. When I want fast-paced RTS action, I play the former. And when I want a nice and slow game, I play the latter. Just a bit of warning: I have played games that took >7 hours to complete in Sins of a Solar Empire.
