Top 5 overrated/underrated games

Overrated

Metroid (just never thought it was great)

Yeah.. they're good but not as good as the fanatics make it out to be. Plus the mysterious door-refuses-to-open bug (Which appears to be on the GC, Wii and DS) is quite annoying.

Rather than list 5 overrated game then list 5 underrated games I've decided to put overlooked games in opposition to overrated games of the same genre and time.

System Shock as opposed to Doom and Doom II

The first system shock is amazing. It has a customizable HUD, mouse aiming, an inventory, puzzles, fully 3D environments, voice acting, and one of the best video game antagonists of all time (SHODAN).

The Doom series is about the player being in a place that has monsters in it.

System Shock 2 as opposed to Half-life

System Shock 2 melds RPG elements (a skill system, an inventory, the ability to create and modify your weapons) with first person shooter combat. The backstory of the characters is very interesting and it features thoughtful antagonists: SHODAN again had the role of rampant AI playing god, and even the hive-minded zombies were interesting because they made you seem like the bad guy who is ruining their collectivist utopia. It is both amusing and highly replayable. It lost its sales to Half-Life and its expansions.

I'm not saying Half-Life is a bad game. The environments are nice, the puzzles are fun. However, the mood quickly fades away, it is linear, and the storyline involves, not unlike Doom, being stuck in a facility where aggressive monsters are coming out of a portal. The game doesn't really have much of a plot. You just keep going forward and face whatever is in your way. The enemies keep teleporting out of thin air, which simply demonstrates that the developers were incapable of properly incorporating them into the environment.

Planescape Torment as opposed to Final Fantasy X (the only ff game I've played)

Internet gaming nerds always talk about Planescape Torment. It's main strong point it the plot. It's about a man who is endlessly reborn without his memories. He must put an end to the cycle and find out about the actions of his past incarnations, some of whom left clues to help him, and others who left traps to kill him. However, it didn't sell very well because the box art is ugly and on the surface the gameplay looks no different from any other isometric RPG. Even though the gameplay isn't bad at all, the plot alone makes it one of the best RPGs.

Final Fantasy is obviously a very popular series. However, I have only played Final Fantasy X, which is apparently one of the best of the series. It was okay, I guess, but definitely overrated. It had an atrociously predictable storyline, awfully linear progression and generic, mindless enemies that had NOTHING to do with the plot.

Grim Fandango as opposed to Myst Series

Grim Fandango is my favourite adventure game, yet it was overlooked in the late nineties as the genre was fading. The setting is unique and incredibly imaginative, the characters and their voice acting is solid, and the dialogue is very clever. The puzzles are nicely paced: the game never feels to quick or too slow.

Myst had a nice feel, and beautiful environments. However, many people believe it killed adventure gaming. It turned people away from the typical plot centered formula, and it felt as if the environments and devices in the game existed for the sole purpose of being puzzles.

Psychonauts

Another overlooked Tim Schafer game. Although the general gameplay and combat doesn't really set it apart from other platformers, this game has some of the best level desing I have ever seen: a suburb with twisted roads and surveillance, a circus made out of meat, a life-size table-top strategy game. The game is centered around the premise of being able to enter people's minds, where various aspects of their personnality and memories are represented in a figurative way: thus the game is centered around the characters by nature.

I can't really find a platformer from that time that I would call overrated.

Since when is Tekken underrated, since it's the most-played 3D tournament fighting game?

I didn't know that. I haven't played the latest tekkens but back in the day everyone was all over street fighter, but no love for tekken, at least that's how I remember it anyway.

Nice signature

Ha! I KNEW someone was gonna get that one on rotation when they saw the comment!

I loved the graphics, they were incredible and stunning. But I personally believe the gameplay itself was extremely drawn out. The graphics were not overrated, they rocked. I disliked the gameplay. Started the dam game 4 times and never got to the end...

someone else said...

underrated = PC

overrated = console

as a whole i agree with that. but strictly talking about games...

Overrated...

1.Halo Series (vastly overrated.... multiplayer games like Counter-Strike (Source) are miles better.)

-Gears of War (a decent game but nothing special)

Underrated (ill include old stuff to)...

-Forza Motorsport Series (easily the best Simulation racing game on the market)

-Mafia (series?, soon to be anyway's with Mafia II due out in Early 2010) (this is MUCH better than the GTA series as i replayed this many times where as GTA games, even though i played and beat them all, i never bothered to replay through them)

-Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (still BY FAR the best fighting game ever made. it's quick/simple to play and actually feels like your playing it unlike damn near every other fighting game that feels like your 'jamming on buttons')

lawl WoW is still the best MMO on the market, bunch of haters here!

I don't think Gears of War is overrated though, even though it still has plenty of room for improvement, it is one of the most unique shooters out right now IMO.

It's the best on the market, yes (is that really saying much?). A okay game being the best dosen't make that game great. It just means it's the best they have come up with yet. It's not the end all MMO that people treat it as.

Overrated does not necessarily mean rubbish. They're all very good games imo and I still play CoD4 often but they have all been extremely overrated

HAWX

Mass Effect

HAWX to me was Ubisoft's attempt at a PC Ace combat. Graphically its beautiful the missions somehow lack that dramatic "Ace Combat feel" and depth in story. Its still some good fun.

Mass Effect is an awesome game. Hoping the sequel lives up to it.
