veritas310
I've been looking into this and being an Apple user for only a short time, I thought I'd pose a question for some more experienced users. One of the offices I work at is an all Mac shop. They have several MacBooks and iMacs. They all either have 10.4.x or 10.3.x, nothing newer than that. On two of the computers, one an Mac Pro, another a MacBook Pro, we would like to upgrade to Tiger. We have the restore discs from other office PC's that have Tiger (2 MacBook Pros). My question, might be extremely simple, is can I: apple+C at startup with the Tiger restore discs on the Panther systems, and upgrade? I appreciate any help you can provide, thanks! thefarewellnote
For legality purposes going to cover all the bases here. Legally you are not allowed to but the below info may help. In most cases, due to technical and licensing reasons, the answer is no. The answer is definitely no if any of the following apply: 1. Any part of the software on the system restore disc is currently installed or in use on Mac A, or on any other computer 2. The OS on the disc is any version of Leopard (10.5.x), or is any version of Tiger later than 10.4.4 3. Either of the two Macs has an Intel processor 4. The system restore discs from Mac A contain an older version of Mac OS X than the version of Mac OS X that was on the install discs that would have shipped with Mac B However, an installation attempt may be successful, and compliant with all OS X licensing terms, if all of the following conditions are met: 1. No part of the software on the system restore disc is currently installed or in use on Mac A, or on any other computer 2. The OS on the disc is Tiger 10.4.3 or earlier, or is an earlier version of OS X (10.3.x, 10.2.x, etc) 3. Both Mac A and Mac B have PowerPC processors (G3, G4, or G5) 4. The system restore discs from Mac A contain a newer version of Mac OS X than the version of Mac OS X that was on the install discs that would have shipped with Mac B 5. All terms of the Mac OS X Software License Agreement are followed, particularly sections 2 and 3 regarding permitted usage and transfer.
veritas310
Thanks for the prompt response, I believe all machines are in fact PowerPC processors (only 1 or 2 machines in the office are Intel, if that). I believe we would meet all requirements to use the restore discs except possibly bullet point 1, I'm not sure if others upgraded that had 10.4 or if they're still currently using. If they are still in use, of course that would violate the licensing agreement. My question was just simply, would it work and I believe you answered that. Thanks! thefarewellnote
My pleasure. Glad I could And didn't want to come across as rude with the legal crap - just didn't want the mods to complain that we may be talking about piracy or breaking any EULAs . Good luck!
