HawkMan
Seems Left 4 Dead went from 5.0 GB to 3.7 GB...not bad, just don't get how and why... The DVD may have had padding and duplicate data to speed up loading speed. the old method of simply stored an image, now they may have a filter or a database that tells them what data to store for different games to avoid storing duplicate data on the hard disk. or they used compression, though that's unlikely as it would use cpu and slow down loading, and more improtantly, all the data on the disk is already compressed, most of it lossy so there would be nothing left to compress
Elessar
Maybe they are getting better at compressing the game data or some such? Or it may leave some stuff on the disk instead of install it all, since you have to have the disk in the cd drive i don't think it would make a huge difference. I'm also talking out of my ass here and have no clue why they are smaller. All I can think of is that they are no longer installing the dummy and security files... @Elessar, You wasted 9 months compiling a list of installed games? :huh:Why did you guys want to do it in the first place. Because some people have 20GB HDDs (and 60GBs too...) so space could easily be an issue. We've also gone through and rated a good portion of the games based on performance (loading times, texture pop-in, etc.) to help users decide if it is worth installing a game or not. You should take a look at the list, it's quite useful actually.
Kushan
One thing I know that they changed, that I'm not happy about, is the wording of the feature list. Originally they stated that additional monitor resolutions would be available for those using HDMI connections, but when we checked the update, only the standard HDTV resolutions were available (480, 720, 1080i/p). They've removed that line completely so it looks like it was a typo or poorly worded or something. No native monitor resolutions for me :(

gigapixels Veteran Posted August 1, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 1, 2009 Perhaps only some TVs allow for resolutions other than 720p/1080i/1080p through HDMI. That would be my guess.
Kushan
No, it's nothing to do with resolutions outside of those, that's what I was saying about it being poorly worded. The whole idea, as far as I can gather, was that some TVs (which are more than capable of taking 1080p) were only reporting that they we're able to handle 720p and in some cases 480p, Disabling display discovery allows those people to select 720p or 1080i/p. However confusion came from when the (original) update sheet listed "additional MONITOR resolutions available over HDMI" when in actual fact it meant "Additional HDTV resolutions". V-99 ODST
I'm always fascinated at the way Microsoft is able to make efficient changes on the Xbox. It makes me feel appreciative and not left out.
Kushan
Yeah, that's by using the "auto" option, which requires display discovery to be ON and for the device to report it correctly. THat's nothing new as far as I'm aware.

+Mystic MVC Posted August 1, 2009 MVC Share Posted August 1, 2009 I turned on my 360 and had to install another update today. I was in the first wave of preview updates, so what's with another update?
Kushan
IT's likely just a bugfix. This IS pre-release software, you know.
spenser.d
I turned on my 360 and had to install another update today. I was in the first wave of preview updates, so what's with another update? Well the reason behind sending people the update early is so they can gather feedback and fix things that look like they can be fixed. I'm guessing that's what they did. -Spenser

George P Global Moderator Posted August 1, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted August 1, 2009 Hey, if installed games start taking up less space on the HDD and run just fine etc, I'm all for it. Better compression? No dummy/padding files? Whatever the answer is, I'm happy. Later on I'll get the 120GB HDD and start getting some of those older 360 games I can't find here. SMELTN
So question. When I go to display, and do the Optional performance. It says my TV to 1360x768. Why? Is that better than 720p? Is that even in HD? Btw I have a LG HDTV. It only supports 720p though

It only supports 720p though pretty much all 720p (1280x720) HDTV screens are actually 1360x768 so yes, it is HD, and technically it is better, but you wouldn't notice a difference. Cool had me worried there for a second. It is a darker picture from the 720p setting for sure, but I can fix that with the TV options.
