FiB3R
just bought Ikaruga the other day. Yes it's great and yes it's ridiculously hard lol Any others to look out for? I love getting more use out of my joystick than just Street Fighter.
-KJ
Thanks, I'll check Ikaruga out :) @Audioboxer: I never knew it was on the PSX. I'll have to try it :D
Dead_Monkey
It's Ikaruga by a country mile. There was a rumour out there that Warashi or one of the other developers (I forget the detail) of lots of shmups had a head to head with Microsoft about games on XBLA, they had wanted to release a whole raft of shooters on the service as bare bones ports and Microsoft balked (they've determined that games should have remixed graphics or some other sort of improvement in addition to online leaderboards, apparently). The rumour continued that they decided to release a compilation retail disc of all those games. Hopefully it's true. Valcon's also got Raiden Fighters Aces (Raiden 1-3) out on disc, it's only 20 bucks, so you can't lose (and it's 18.99 with freeship on deepdiscountdvd, and if you go through bing, you can get 4% cashback, if you're a cheapskate). Both are great :)

Dead_Monkey
Damn, Raiden Fighters Aces is only available in Japan and the US nether of which are region free :(Any others? On disc you also have Senko No Ronde. Ubisoft gave it some bizarre name when it came to the US (Wartech?). It should be inexpensive now (like ten bucks inexpensive), and Ubisoft's games are frequently region-free.G.Rev also just released Mamonoro to retail in Japan. neoadorable
there's some of the classics out there - Xevious, Galaga, R-Type etc...Aces of the Galaxy is good, if you can get it to work on your console. Heard good things about Omega 5 (i think it's called), but never tried it.
LOC Veteran Posted July 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 22, 2009 Trigger Heart is awesome. So is Power Up Forever (though it's a multi-directional shooter like GeoWars) Heavy Weapon could be considered a shmup I think, and it's fun as hell. TheTempestSonata
Ikaruga is light years above almost any other major release shmup game. There's some doujin games though... they kinda take the cake...
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted July 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 22, 2009 Space Invaders Extreme is also a fantasitc game (Y) Old school Space Invaders is as well, but it's not on XBLA.
Dead_Monkey
Space Invaders Extreme is also a fantasitc game (Y)Old school Space Invaders is as well, but it's not on XBLA. Damn, yeah, how did I forget this? Extreme is much more of a SHMUP than the original was (bosses, bonus stages). Galaga of course. I didn't really care for the "modernized" Galaga they released though. It didn't do that good a job retaining the classic feel, unlike their Pac Man remix. Remysaus
Does Geometry Wars Evolved count as a shoot em up? At any rate, very addictive game, especially evolved 2.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted July 23, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 23, 2009 Yeah it belongs to a sub-genre of shoot 'em ups.
