piehouserat
One of the main uses of my current pc is playing large 1080p mkv files using either VLC or MPC. I'm seriously thinking about buying a mac soon and was wondering if there are suitable players out there for osx. I'm aware there's a vlc for osx but is it any good? Can the latest macs play 20gb mkv files smoothly? Lastly, can you use the apple remote control with vlc/other osx media players? Cheers, Martin
giga Veteran Posted July 24, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 24, 2009 VLC, Quicktime with Perian, Plex, Mplayer Extended can all handle it. Pretty much all can use the remote. I've found Plex to be the smoothest at handling them.

I just streamed a 20 GB MKV from an external drive without any problems
cpressland2
A year ago, I couldn't do it on my Mac, however VLC and other players quickly caught up and these days streaming a 1080p 20GB h264 file is easy :)
piehouserat
Thanks for the advice guys, looks like I'll be checking out plex. When I bought an apple universal iPod dock it came with a remote, will I be able to use that to control a mac or will I have to buy a different one, it looks exactly the same as the regular mac remote. shihchiun
Should work - don't new Macs come with them? Mine did, but that was a few years ago.

Yes it will work - if at first you don't see it working press menu and the rewind (back) button on the remote for about 10 secs. This will attempt to repair it. Let me know if you have any questions with Plex!
.Neo
Plex and QuickTime with the Perian plugin installed work best for me. (Y) VLC stutters like crazy on my Mac Pro. :/
thefarewellnote
I also should add that Plex will play any media format (avi, divx, mkv, and even ISO dvds that you may have) And there is a great community on their website too!
