[HDMI -> DVI] Did work, now dosen't!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Hope you can help me out here?

I tried connecting my xbox up to my monitors(saving the life of my projector), when I first connected it to my 19" it worked if not a bit buggy, but a quick resoultion change sorted that. So I then thought to try it on my 21" monitor and get 1680x1050, but as soon i connected this is when the problems started, it then complained that my monitor is not connected to a source then goes onto standby, so i thought right go back to my 19" and what you know that said the exact same thing! I thought may be just resoultion got whacked so i tried the "Reset video setting trick Y+RT" but that didn't work, I then decided to connect back up to my projector and record the steps to get into the video setting menu did that and tried it when connected to the monitors and still no luck?

can anyone help me?

If there is no way really to sort it to allow me to use "hdmi -> dvi", can people give me a bit of advice on the vga cable that you can buy for xbox is it worth it? what the quality like? could i still get crisp graphics with it?

thanks for the help matt

I didn't think you could change resolution with HDMI? Thought it was 720p or 1080p.

I've got mine running via VGA and it looks great at 1920x1080 (BenQ G2412HD). It was the only option I had (no HDMI on this 360, but it was available on the monitor) so I can't compare, but I think it looks really good, and most likely no difference.

well when i connected my hdmi to dvi it seemed to have option to change the resolution, however when i changed its it 1680x1050 thats when the problems started so i wonder if it got confused.

and on the vga front i may give it a try then if looks great, just didnt want to look any image quality!

Just a warning, non-Microsoft cables might have some issues, I personally got one from DealExtreme and it works fine, but a few people have reported problems like ghosting, but you can always swap it for another one so yeah, just keep that in mind.

Ok so I ended up buying a VGA cable, but can I ask you guys

1.Can I use a vga->dvi convertor?

2.What's the best resolution to have for a 19" monitor?

The best resolution to have is (and always is) the native resolution for the monitor. You should be able to find this out.. if not, try 1440x900 or 1680x1050 - I'd imagine it would be one of these if it's a widescreen (16:10) monitor. The XBox supports both of these resolutions over VGA.
