Woman makes $60,000 as Phone Sex Operator

ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- Sex sells. We've all heard the saying. And, apparently, it's true even in a recession.

One area phone sex operator, who we'll call "Robin," says business is up, even as the economy is down.

"People are still finding a way to pay for it," she explained.

After losing her job, Robin came across an opening for a phone sex operator.

"It asked, 'Do you have a great voice?'" she recalled.

Although she's 36, Robin does have a great voice for a phone sex operator.

She sounds younger, like she could be a 23-year-old college co-ed.

And that's the exact character she decided to play for NiteFlirt.com.

Within three months, she was the most popular operator in the submissive category.

"My demographic is really to the 55 and older [men]," she explained. Are there moral questions? Of course.

Robin says she's a good person, she goes to church, and her job doesn't define her.

"If you have a better answer, then by all means, share it with the class. If you don't, then you need to understand that right now is a

bad economy," she explained.

Robin says her job is no less ethical than pharmaceutical reps who make money by selling drugs that people need.

It's no secret that ethical lines can blur in a bad economy. In a study conducted

by Harris Interactive, 28 percent of people said they would act immorally - including lying or backstabbing - to keep their jobs.

Thirteen percent of respondents said they would outright lie or exaggerate to keep their jobs.

About two percent said they would take credit for someone else's work or fight with the boss to get ahead, and four percent would lie

about having common interests with their boss.

Though they deal with more traditional professions, recruiters at Tampa Bay WorkForce Alliance say the key to getting a job is getting

creative.

"What we have seen is people are a little more compromising in terms of the options that they're open to," said professional recruiter Fanny

Leal.

"Maybe the salary range that they were previously demanding or maybe the position or title that they were previously looking for. Maybe if

they were managers, they're really looking for a representative or an associate level. Anything to meet their needs."

Tampa Bay WorkForce Alliance is a workforce development organization that offers free services, including fax and internet, to people who

are looking for jobs.

Professional recruiters suggest job seekers visit an interactive state website, where they can register and upload their resume. Ater inputting their

information, the site generates feedback on appropriate industries given their skill set.

Robin makes between $60,000 and $70,000 a year. Last year, she made $62,000 on her taxes. That doesn't include the $10,000 she received in

gifts from clients.

Phone sex operators can register for gifts on sites like Amazon.com. The sites maintain anonymity and clients go there to buy gifts.

Robin has received several gifts from clients, including a $5,000 bedroom set, a couch, and $2,000 in Tiffany jewelry.
