+Frank B. Subscriber² Posted July 30, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted July 30, 2009 Apple Updates Time Capsule to 1 TB and 2 TB Capacities Apple this morning quietly updated its Time Capsule combination wireless router and network-attached storage drive to double the models' capacities at the same price points as the previous models: 1 TB for $299 and 2 TB for $499. While Apple's main Time Capsule product page is not yet reflecting the upgraded capacities, the new models are available in the online Apple Store, where a small banner ad on the main store page advertises the upgrade. The new models are currently listed as shipping within 24 hours. Rumors of a 2 TB Time Capsule first surfaced in early April when an image of a 2 TB Time Capsule box appeared on one of retailer ClubMac's product pages. ccuk
Seems incredibly overpriced for a device that offers no data redundancy. Surely its cheaper to buy the standalone router and plug in a USB HDD, than buy the capsule?
Sethos
Isn't this just a HDD in a white plastic shell? $299  $499 :|

Vice
Way overpriced. I'd rather continue to use Time Machine with my own Home Server.

Ricardo Gil
A month earlier and I would have thought about getting one... But I already bought an Eee 1005HA running W7 and a My Book 750GB for around the same price 2 weeks ago. It also does much more.
offroadaaron
ok Router with Gig ethernet Wireless N and 1TB HDD. Wicked interface and it works awesomely..... Compared to something that probably has 1000 bugs and is big and junky (2 devices)...... I know what I'd rather sitting on my desk! Plug is has usb for print server or another HDD as well, or both! PyX
Yesterday, I went to staples and took a look at the external hard drives. I was looking at quality products, not crap, to begin with... and I've seen $340 for a 1 TB hard drive $300 for a 1.5 TB hard drive $260 for a 1.5 TB hard drive $260 for a 1 TB hard drive $260 for a 1 TB hard drive ... Source : Staples.Ca There was about 10 good products, and I wouldn't touch to the rest. So here, you're getting the package at $329 : 1TB hard drive, plus a dual-band router that handles the 5GHz bandwidth as well as the 2.4GHz. I'm not saying it's a deal here, but it's not overpriced at least for the 1TB. I've had a 500GB version of Time Capsule for over a year, and so far it's been my most reliable router ever (though I have to say, it's still based on WiFi, so it can have loss of signal sometimes). What a load of crap, there is no way a "good" 1TB ext. HDD costs that much today. Even if you justify the $2991TB, how do you justify the extra $200 for a 2TB drive (~1TB for $200)? It is overpriced. My point is you can do it using an Apple Airport Extreme dual band router plus a USB HDD, for less money than buying a capsule.

A Time Capsule would be more aesthetically pleasing I would imagine, having a single unit rather than a router plus an external hard drive with wires all over the place. That sort of thing matters to some people. (Not me, personally. I'd just get the router + external hard drive. :p )
Simon Veteran Posted July 31, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 31, 2009 Not sure if it would matter over WiFi, but there is a speed difference between USB and SATA speeds, aka external and internal.
