Shane Kim iffy on on-demand Xbox 360 games releasing day-and-date with retail

by Alexander Sliwinski

Shane Kim, Microsoft's VP of strategy and business development for Xbox, admits that the company is "not anywhere close to that world today" of offering day-and-date releases of on-demand Xbox 360 games alongside retail launches. In an interview with Fast Company, Kim expresses that offering Xbox 360 games on the Xbox Marketplace is a "natural evolution," but states there are "complex issues" to deal with by offering digital versions of games on their retail release days. You can't download NVGs, after all.

Kim explains that day-and-date digital releases would require technical effort by publishers to make the process smooth, and there are also business decisions to weigh -- like, you know, upsetting a major retail games giant. According to Kim, Microsoft still has a lot of work to do before offering games through Xbox Live Marketplace on a grand scale.

I agree with him. Although it would be great to be able to get it on same day, I just don't see it happening yet. But to be able to purchase old games, or 1-3 month old games would be great.

I'd be fine with being able to get older hard to find games first. Newer ones aren't that big of an issue unless you live in a part of the world where it's hard to find many 360 titles.

I know here in greece, I couldn't find some games at the major outlets, and it's a big shame. They have such a limited library you can pick from. And I can't order online since lots of places don't even ship games here for some stupid reason.

I hope MS has all the older 360 games up and at a good price so I can play older ones I've missed.

I think the games that you're likely to see are the platinum hits and other titles that have been discounted to $30 or below.

If they're coming later they better come cheaper, the main reason Sony has seen some success out of putting their 1st party content on the store is it released day 1 with retail so some people choose convenience over going to a store when prices were similar.

However now you'd be daft to buy Socom/Warhawk or GT5P or even Siren/R&C Booty Bay on PSN as you can get them in retail cheaper (unless you are wanting to pay more for no disc swapping, the price gaps aren't that bad as these titles launched on PSN at like ?25/?30, but they've kind of stayed near that).

MS can't charge RRP for these titles months later (I don't think they will though, probably around ?30 if it's only a few months).

I look forward to the day where I can download the latest game direct to my console. I am in the few that do not really care about owning a physical copy of said game.

As another poster has said on here we won't really see this until next generation and even then physical copies will still exist.

I thought this might be the case, MS doesn't want to **** off retail partners after all, they will still bring in the most sales.
