The Hunter: The Most Realistic Hunting Game Online

Recommended Posts

I don't know if it's been posted before, but I've done a search and came up blank. I found out about this game a few months ago, let my friend know about it because he's into the hunting type games: Deer Hunter, et al. I decided to finally give it a whirl today. It's not that bad, but I only say that because I am not into hunting games.

Here's an in-game screenshot, more can be found here:

Here's a video of the game, more videos can be found here:

I tried this a while back, might be great for people who know what they're doing, or people who hunt IRL. For me, however. Really, really boring.

Sure. If realistic mean deer look like plastic.

Ah, but you see, it says most realistic ;) Technically, Wolfenstein 3D (or any example) was the most realistic shooter at one point. :D

And it still is!

I played this game a while ago. I remember it took me over an hour to actually find any deer. Then I took a shot and missed and it took me another hour to find one again. When I finally killed one I actually felt kinda bad. He was just sitting in the sun chilling out....poor little guy.

This uses the Avalanche 2.0 engine. The same engine that Just Cause 2 is on. Of course, it's much better looking on PC, but just an FYI for those who don't know.

Yes, this game is realistic. Like eviljedi said, it can take a longggg time to find any animals to hunt. If you screw up, you wait more. But the game is just gorgeous.

And you really feel like you are walking/running around a forest, plus the ambience is amazing also.

I was wondering what game engine it used. At first, I thought it was a modified version of CryENGINE. It sounds interesting but boring at the same time. I'd hate to sit around doing nothing but waiting for a deer to show up out of nowhere.

I've got all the settings on full, but I've got a high end PC. Although, I've actually only played it once.

I am having a blast with it. It looks GREAT, especially to be a 500meg download and free game. Its actually really fun to play. Although like the rest of you my only problem is sitting and waiting on deer to show up.

It is a very beautiful game. But you need to have patienceeeeeeee when you play it. Otherwise, if you think your gonna go in the game, and shoot up hunting lodges and deer etc, you better play something else lol.

I've also been playing for a couple days. We'll not really playing just wandering around with my GPS looking for deer, rabbits, anything to shoot. Sat in some tree stands Looked for coyotes down by the water and followed some animal trails which are all over the place. I'd love for those animals to show up on my GPS. Beautiful game however. The best graphics by far on a hunting game.

Tips on Finding Certain Animals

by: kallie at http://forum.thehunter.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=7769

Thanks Kallie

" Just thought I'd post this, and people can add to it. I just remember when I first joined, I couldn't figure out the best places to find certain animals. Just thought this would help out some newer members. When I talk about the 'lodge' I'm talking about the northern lodge and northern island area. The southern area lodge and island doesn't hold many animals to the best of my knowledge besides north of the little lakes. "

MULE DEER:

Does - Does are everywhere, they will find you, don't worry.

Bucks - Mule deer bucks can be a bit difficult at some times. Some aren't as vocal as others. Watch your Huntermate for calls that you can't hear but it can pick up. The bucks have a grunt like call, the does have a bleat like call. Once you hear the two, they are easy to distinguish from each other. They can be found throughout the map as well.

WHITETAIL DEER:

Does - Again, does are more curious than the bucks and they will be the first to come and investigate after you call or scent mark an area. The southern area is good for finding them, pretty much anywhere south of the lodge, and by the lake.

Buck - Whitetail deer bucks can be even more picky than the Mule bucks. They seem to be more flighty and pick up on any sudden movements. You can find them mainly south of the lodge and by the lake, along with the entire southern area.

Note: I have seen Whitetail deer, bucks and does, far north of the lodge as well. They just seem more relaxed and vocal to the south.

ELK:

Cows - Female elk are also very curious. They come when you use the elk call and scent to check everything else. When you shoot at one, the rest don't run far, they tend to go just out of sight. If you stay put and call, they will come back most likely. They can be found throughout the map, but I have noticed they like to be by the waters edge by the beach and the lake. You can also find them in the fields early morning by the campground to the south.

Bulls - The male elk is easy to identify by it's call. The cows pretty much just do a single call, loud but short. The bulls have a louder and longer call that changes in pitches. They can be found in the same areas as the cows. When trying to find a nice bull, just be patient. If you see a small bull come out of the woods, wait a few more minutes, there is probably a bigger one behind it.

TURKEY:

Both genders - Turkey's can be found south of the lodge. The hens call in a series of clucks, while the toms gobble. You can call for them, but don't do it to much or else you will scare them away. They can be found in open fields throughout the day and pretty much everywhere in the south.

COYOTE:

Both genders - The females are more present than the males, and seem to be less flighty. They both bark just like dogs and your Huntermate will not pick up this call just yet, considering that they are new to the game. The coyotes can be found throughout the map but are more concentrated in the southern area. The South West of the map holds many fields, and north of the campground seems to be a great place to find them.

Also from LMP86 from The Hunters forum (same as listed above) Great information over at the site.

" I'll add a little about the southern peninsula. IMHO it's a bit underrated. Sure, you don't find as many animals there, but that also means less does and spikes to spoil your shot at a nice buck, if you find one. Especially since the most numerable specie of the peninsula - the whitetail deer - doesn't herd. There are also many clearings, especially near the crossing between the peninsulas, where you can take some really long shots. "

MULE DEER:

Don't count on finding many Muleys down south. They appear occasionally, but if Mule is your quarry for today, hunt north.

WHITETAIL DEER:

You can find them mostly north of the line of small lakes in the middle of the peninsula. Once you reach the lakes, hide in the bushes on the southern edge or get up the tower and try a few calls. If you're lucky, you'll lure them out into the open for a clear shot.

There's also a lot of them around the hilly area in the northern part of the peninsula. Keep a good look out though, cause there's a lot of open terrain and they can spot you from far away.

ELK:

Like whitetails, they're mostly beyond the line of small lakes, but I've seen herds not far from the lodge too, so be vigilant. Elks also like the areas around the hills in the northern part of the peninsula.

TURKEY:

They appear occasionally, but if you're looking for them, you really should be in the lake area of the other (northern) peninsula.

COYOTE:

Never seen one down there. Probably every now and then one gets lost and wanders to the southern peninsula, but don't count on it.

When it rains it pours. I just got three mule deer SE of The Causeway (1) from the 3 stands. I first spotted them within 100 yards of the stands and then quietly walked to the stands and lured them in with calls. Less then an hour.

NICE.. I sat there last night for 30 mins and called. I ended up having 10 females come right by me but no males... Sucked.. Of course I never took a shot on the females.
