Tharp Daddy
I have no clue how to connect to neowin IRC after about 20 minutes of google searching. I bring up MIRC i hit File, select server, and look through the list - none say Neowin. i looked at the IRC tab at the top of this site, and it just gives server info, i have no clue how to connect to it. vincent
irc.neowin.net is what you want to connect to, you have to add it manually.
Rob2687
You have to add it manually. http://www.the-scream.co.uk/html/resources/mircguide.html
Timan Veteran Posted August 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 6, 2009 irc://irc.neowin.net/neowin See if you can click that, should connect you (you may still need the user/pass tho)
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted August 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 6, 2009 First thing you'll want to do is setup the IRC stuff at http://services.neowin.net/irc/ You can chose a username and it gives information on the server details you'll need (since the IRC server is linked to the forums)
Tharp Daddy
i think i'm in the right server, if not ill just talk to these random people.

kimsland
You know I actually hate this IRC crap When we (sorry I mean us real old techs) first started out, we use to say we hated all this chat stuff Anyway, obviously about 5 or so (possibly more) years ago, everyone started using IRC as their contact (well one of the contacts) It's just that I decided not to. Anyway, I ended up downloading about 3 of these programs to log on (as requested on one of the varied tech forums I was on. And only a few hours later I was on (obviously unsecured, but us newbies don't know nothin) Anyway, I tried to manually configure everything (on your advanced users only guide !) Personally I've always wanted to create a really really basic step 1 step 2 guide and so on, and miss absolutely nothing Because every single time I try to do this, 1 hr goes past, and then I think I've got no idea. So I'm posting here, just in case some kind person can walk me through. For the moment here's 2 screen capture images, just to show you how much fun I'm having :/
IMPSBL
You know I actually hate this IRC crap Maybe because it's ICQ, not IRC? :D You need this client here http://www.mirc.com/
Jiggah
Uh....that's ICQ not IRC. Edit: Beaten to the punch. Another one is Xchat or some of the multi-protocol chat programs will have support for IRC i.e. Pidgin.
Kenji
This is how I connect. 1. Get mIRC. 2. Go here, set your IRC nickname and click apply. 3. Open mIRC 4. Set your nickname to the nick you entered in the above step. 5. Press ALT + R 6. Paste the following code, replacing "yourneowinpasswordhere" with your password, obviously, then click ok. ON *:START: { server irc.neowin.net 6667 yourneowinpasswordhere } 5. Close mIRC then open again. That should work with no problems.

kimsland
Maybe because it's ICQ, not IRC? :D Oh ok, but I'll highlight the next quote for you (not that I'm now disputing it, but you may be able to see the issue) This is how I connect. 1. Get mIRC. 2. ... Oh I have to get some "IRC" thing do I? By the way, thanks for your basic steps, this is what I wanted, strangely I haven't tried it yet, because I'm replying to a few here. But I'm sure it'll work LOLReal techie :) Thanks, ironically I don't need yahoo chat either ! And I don't like facebook Just in case you think techs should have all this stuff, of which I've never needed. I'm a hands on Tech, I have never had a computer I can't fix, obviously. Although I'm sure you have had one As for "ICQ" No that's not a computer fault ;) No biggy, we'll attribute that to lack of sleep :p I have no idea how you would know this But you are spot on. You'll find that I get more abrupt when I'm tired, I'm trying to avoid this when I can True I get about ~5Hrs sleep most nights, for the last, say 5 years or so. Yes it is possible, because I do it all the time. Actually I've become so use to it, I can still perform normally (somewhat) This ICQ issue, I could have just Googled, or played around until I worked it out But I saw the thread and asked the question. I still believe there should be a basic guide, but this thread may now be it. :) Edit: Damn my (freshly downloaded) mIRC has now expired (even though I didn't have it installed, I think I must have used that one last year) I'll find another, unless someone replies with use this one... Jamushroom Veteran Posted August 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 6, 2009 (edited) ^Sorry, but I just couldn't resist to reply to your post. To say that you never had a PC you can't fix and to suggest that hjf288 did, sounds pretty arrogant to me. And Beastage said that because everyone would act sloppy when they're sleepy. As for a basic guide, look at Rob2687 and The_Decryptor's posts. And if you want to go more basic than those guides, read Kenji's post. Guest xiphi
Even if mIRC expires you can still use it. Just wait a few seconds and it'll let you continue.
carmatic
icq = instant 1-to-1 messaging irc = chatrooms surely you know the difference, right? why are you trying to put an irc address into the icq connection settings

+Frank B. Subscriber² Posted August 25, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted August 25, 2009 Quite simple. In the XChat Network List, click on 'Add'. Name the new network Neowin. Select it, then click on 'Edit'. Your settings should look like this: (using your own nickname and password of course.)
