Best Buy Price Matching New Games at Used Prices from GameStop?

CAG xxDOYLExx snapped this photo at his local Best Buy in West Jordan, Utah. This is probably only available in select markets and the promotion likely has restrictions, but it's certainly noteworthy.

this isnt that great... typically Gamestop's used prices are only $5-10 less than the new copies. rip off either way... i'll stick to cheaper games on ebay

Not a big deal. Gamestop usually sells their used games for unreasonably high prices, especially X360 and PS3 games. BB will still make a few bucks if they price match, not to mention make money on the other things you will probably pickup while in the store.

Good business strategy as far as I'm concerned.

$5 off is still $5 off... plus anychance to not buy a game from Gamestop is a + for me... you can trade in a used game the same day you bought it and get killed in trade-in value... then Gamestop jacks up the price to resell it... its nuts...

Buy X new game for $59.99

Trade in same day for $35 in store credit

They re-sell X game for $54.99

I much prefer Best Buy over GameStop personally. Too many bad memories at GameStop. I'm scarred I tell's ya', SCARRED!...

I used to work for Gamestop, and I still have a pretty bad grudge with them, at least they're willing to let me come back, but the way Bestbuy let me go when I was sixteen, I will ALWAYS harbor a grudge against them.

"Why buy used when you can buy new?" asks a new Best Buy retail display discovered in West Jordan, Utah [via CAG]. According to the poster, Best Buy will offer new video games for the same price as used equivalents from GameStop and GameCrazy. With GameStop's used prices at least $5 cheaper than retail price, shoppers are guaranteed to get a small discount on every new game at this Best Buy location.

It's currently unclear if this is a nationwide Best Buy policy, or if it's simply a localized test. We've contacted Best Buy for more information, and will update the story with an official statement. Until then, let us know if your local Best Buy is also participating in this program. Update: A Best Buy representative informed us that this is, indeed, a local test and not a nationwide program. Hopefully, the "test" proves positive, as we'd love to see this program expand.

I hope they go nationwide with this, with the ~11% cashback you can get with all the Reward Zone bonuses I might be able to start buying all my games on release day.

Saving a few bucks still adds up over time, especially if you are one of those people you builds up a library of games. Even if $5 is nothing for some of you, I feel much happier and excited buying a new, sealed game.

Now this is huge. I have already been getting BB to match the new game prices that GS has on older stuff. Getting them to match the used price on new stuff is going to be great.

I love how all of you complain about gamestop, exspecially jerzdawg. Now here is what I think about it.

If you buy a pc/tv/ etc ANY ELECTRONIC, and you sell it the same day or within the first week or first month, it drops HALF IN VALUE, why cant games be the same?

GameStop will make NO MONEY if they provide you almost full value for trading in a game, thats like returning it. When you trade in a game, its GameStops property, they need to make money. Its all about business. If you dont like it deal with it, but its not unfair if you think about it. Theres a lot of stuff you can buy new, and sell it within the first month and you wont get back full. Youll get anywhere from 50-75% back.

You guys can hate GameStop all you want, I can careless. But, Im trying to see why people blindly blame gamestop when bestbuy is WORSE. I have friends there that say its HELL but they have to deal with it becuase it looks good to other jobs. They get treated like ****. As a customer in there store, I cant go 5 minutes without getting badged my ass off and getting sold false products. Like selling a monster cable for a simple setup. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Like Andrew said, when they let you go, they let you go hard. Its like they tarnish your record. One of my friends got fired for offering "too much advice". All he told the customer was, instead of reparing the old computer(motherboard died, hd was on its way out) why not just buy a new one for $500 or so. Well apparently his manager did not like it because he told him to NEVER do it agian. Why? Because the repairs would of been $250+ and then they would of sold him a Protection plan on it. This way they make a bigger profit then just selling a new pc.

So you guys should think about what your saying. I mean really COME ON. Personally, I love my job. I can tell customers the right thing to do and I dont get hounded for it. Its really laid back and relaxing. Most people make it hell, but really, how hard is it too sell games?

Whatever your guys reasons are I would like to hear them. In a way im protecting GameStop becuase my store is not one of those "nazi" stores. We have MANY regulars that love us. They have been coming to my store since it was software etc. So idk why people have a fit, companies have to make money, they cant make money by giving you your full money back. Common sense.

In general, when it comes to working for retailers. it'll sucks... generally. It's gonna vary by stores, and the management team. One could be just absolute ********, while another are nice guys. I absolutely hate the way Geek Squad is ran sometimes, and you pointed out a good example on that. I would never charge ANYONE $250 bucks, just to say "lol ur mobo is ded, buy a new one!"

Same with Gamestop. It would vary by stores and managers. Some are awesome. Some aren't.

I think you need to redo your math. You get 1.25% cashback with the Rewards Zone bonuses. Unless Best Buy has highly different cashback rates where you're from.

I wasn't aware we was arguing about this at all - this is about buying a brand new game for the same price as the pre-owned game, nothing about trade-in prices :p

Nevertheless, trade in prices *always* suck. I understand there's a need for profit, but in the UK the -best- trade in price I'll get for my Wii is ?60, where the same shop sells pre-owned Wiis for ?150, making it a 150% profit on my sale. It's not so much the shop, it's the used games market in general, they all rip you off like crazy.

I used to work for them so I saw first hand how they rip people off and what they do to their employees. So I am all for whatever brings gamestop down. The main reason I choose Bestbuy over them is due to the reward zone points that can be used for future purchases. Aside from that I would buy everything online instead. I refuse to give gamestop money unless there is no other way. Also about the Bestbuy cable issue, yeah it sucks but thats going to fall heavily on the user to do research before they buy. If you are too stupid to ask questions on this stuff then you deserved to be suckered out of your money. I went thru this when I bought my hd tv earlier this year. I came to these message boards and asked questions on HD cables. Once I was told the truth about cables I was glad. I even used this to my advantage at the store. When I talked to the sales guy I told him I want him to be honest. I know the truth about those overpriced cables and other accessories. I told him to take all that stuff off. I said to him if you start out being honest with your customers you will end up making a bigger sale in the long run. The guy ended up discounting the HD TV by alot and we ended up spending the same amount of money in the end but instead of crap I didnt need like monster cables I spent the difference in buying games for the xbox 360 system.

In the US it is 2% on all purchases, plus $10 for every $150 spent on games, plus an additional 25% to all points earned if you spent $2,500 there in the past year.
