My friend has a custom built computer that consist of these specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo. 2.2Ghz.

2.00GB RAM

500GB Hard Drive

nVidia GeForce 8500 GT 1024 MB of Onboard vRAM

Windows XP

How would you rate the performance of this build for games such as...Gears of War, Crysis, Far Cry 2, WoW, etc..?

I'm not very certain about computer builds anymore as I've lost my interest in PC gaming but he is pretty new to the custom built pc thing. Also, I think he is spending like $550 for building it. What you guys think?

The one thing I'd upgrade is the graphics card, and possibly new hard drives, and maybe more ram.

So how do you think those games would perform on it though? That's what it all comes down to him. I mean, I've tried talking to him about that one awesome video card that is not nVida...I can't remember the exact name.

The ONLY thing.. lol Andy you just put upgrades for everything.

Ok so what OS is he looking at running? That helps to know.

500gb hard drive is fine, 2.2 core2duo is decent, depending on operating system and ddr version, you could do another stick of ram. (For Vista or 7 I would suggest 4gigs to be comfortable) Video card is decent, but you can get a 8800 GT or even a newer model for cheap now.

I believe it's going to be Windows XP, i've told him to stay away from Windows Vista. I don't think he wants Windows 7. DDR2. So, with that being said, I'm still trying to figure out what he is getting himself into and for that price if it is worth it.

Is this a prebuilt system or is he buying all the parts and building it himself??

I can't really quote him on this, I could of sworn he said he was going to build it himself or it could be pre-built, I can't remember to be exact.

With those specs I can guarantee that Crysis will not run well (at least not anything near optimized settings).

What about the others, GoW, Far Cry 2, I'm sure WoW will run great on it.

Far Cry 2 will have similar performance as Crysis, maybe a little better or a little worse depending. It will run WoW like a champ though. Can't comment on GoW because I've never played it.

they still sell 8500gt's ? atleast get a 9600gt :p

it will run the games ok you won't be able to play crysis well (maybe 10 fps? (basing off an 8600gt))

the real main component for your games is the video card

the cpu will be fine but maybe push for a better graphic card

if he doesn't want physx i guess he can go for the ati 4770 they are priced rather well as for their overall performance i can't remember the exact figures so i'll leave this for someone else to answer :)

>>+trag3dy

from what i've seen gow = wow just slightly different theme and maybe lighter graphics

Hm, I'm just trying to help him out as I've mentioned. I've talked to him about it and it is a pre-built one, I got the wrong idea or heard something wrong when I saw the specs. Upgrading the video card won't be any problem though if he does get that correct? It's been a while since I've been into PC parts/gaming so it's all so new it me again and I feel horrible for being at a pc forum :( and a regular.

Anyways, like I've asked just is it going to be a big issue if he does end up removing that video card and getting another for an upgrade on performance?

So he turned down that other computer and went out and bought this...

  • Phenom X4 9750 (2.40GHz)
  • 2GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHZ- 2X1GB DIM M
  • ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB
  • 320GB NCQ Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM) w/ 16MB DataBurst Cache
  • Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Basic Edition (HE SAID HE IS GETTING WINDOWS 7)

My friend Tyler, said he was on more of a budge pc and saw dreammachine09 and went with parts identical and built it for a little less than they said it would be.

So what do you think? I've watched some youtube videos on the video card and for the price it seems great. Any thoughts? I told him he might want to upgrade RAM once Windows 7 comes out.
