MBP vs. MB (2008 model)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I figured I should ask this on Neowin, as you guys know best.

I'm in the market for a 13" Macbook.

I can get a Macbook, 2008 model, for $850...

which is 2.40 GHz, 250 GB HDD, 2 GB RAM, etc

Why should I choose a new 13" Macbook Pro with roughly the same specs (2.54 GHz processor, not much difference) if it costs ~$1,500 shipped?

That's nearly twice the price.

Any input is highly appreciated.

-Will

Excuse me, I forgot to include that the pro i'm looking at is a 13" as well.

The pro has 4GB of RAM rather than 2 GB but that shouldn't count too much towards the Pro.

Get the old model and then add an extra 2GB (Y)

that's exactly where I'm going with this :D

I was just wondering if the Pro is worth the extra $700 :p

You can get a 2008 refurb from the Apple refurb store - and their refurbs are as good as new.

What you'll get with the 2008 model is:

- slower processor

- no sd card slot

- 2GB less ram

- slightly less quality screen (although this is debatable)

- no "pro" label

- 2 hours less battery

4GB of ram shouldn't cost much, and you can always put the 2GB on fleabay

I'm just thinking .13 GHz more processing speed isn't worth $500+ more

and thanks bmaher for the list. Since you said 2 hrs less battery life...whats the average battery life for the Pro and the 2008 MB?

On my new 13" MP I am getting around 5.5 hours of battery usage when just surfing the internet (Bluetooth off). If I were you I would get the aluminum because it is faster, it has the new trackpad (which is AMAZING), better screen, better looking and also its not plastic so build quality is amazing. Also I have heard the the old Macbook heats up like crazy...

errrr...

i assume the 2008 macbook is the same as mine, so there is also the matter of the GFX card.

I have an intel x3100, whereas the new macbooks carry the nvidia geforce 9400.

I usually always get dead on, or just above, Apple's estimates. When I had a 2008 MacBook (Alu) I got about 5.5 hours from it, with screen brightness on medium, wireless on and bluetooth off.

This was a huge deal for my purchase. From what I've heard, there is a significant difference between the MB and the MBP with regards to video card performance, so if that is a selling point for you, I'd certainly consider the upgrade to the MBP (I suspect that's where a significant percentage of that price increase which you mentioned comes from)
