Arpit
so i have an almost 2 year old 15" macbook pro (core 2 duo 2.4 ghz santa rosa) and it seems to be restarting randomly, as in complete power off and restarting without closing any programs and such. it tends to happen more frequently when i'm carrying it from one place to another but also happens when it's sitting on my desk. i've no idea what's going on but it's increasingly irksome. sometimes when it restarts, nothing would show up on the screen even though i can hear the hard disk spinning. i took it to the genius bar and he tried booting into their graphics test drive and it worked then so he said there's nothing wrong with it but i don't know how to recreate the problem and explain it to him. if it helps at all, some related notes: - it had the logic board replaced last year because of the graphics card issue. - i replaced the stock ram and added 4 gb ram (kingston i believe) - the restarts happen even when the power is plugged in so i don't believe it's the battery (the wire remains untouched) if anyone can help at all, i'd really appreciate it...it's not under warranty anymore and i can't afford getting a new one, nor having the logic board replaced... Japlabot
try resetting the PM chip.. I can't remember how to do it exactly (hold down the power button for 10 seconds while battery and power cable is out I think?) but I'm sure google will help you. Miuku.
Reset SMC + PRAM. First, remove the battery and the power cable. Press power button for 5 seconds. Then, insert battery, then the power cable. Then turn on power and immediately after press left alt+right apple logo and PR (all 4 must be pressed) at the same time for a few seconds. You will hear a second startup sound. If that does not fix the restarting, you need to run a system memory check - I would suggest using the memtest.org's bootable Linux CD ( http://www.memtest.org/ ).
