My 360 is overheating a lot

Recommended Posts

My 360 has recently been overheating a hell of a lot. It usually happens only on specific games (Guitar Hero World Tour/Metallica, Call of Duty: WaW, Assassin's Creed, Fight Night Round 4 demo, and a few others), and I can't seem to do anything to prevent it. The best result I've had so far is using the Nyko Intercooler prolongs the overheating by a few minutes. I keep thinking that it's overheating because of the weather round here, as it started when summer pretty much started over here, and it's been really hot some days.

I thought that the power supply getting hot caused the 360 to shut off and go into overheat mode, but I just swapped the power supplies, and it overheated on GH Metallica after just 5 minutes, and the power supply was still almost cold. The weird thing is that the 360 is barely hot. It's hot on one small spot on top of the console, and it's not that hot behind the air vents, so it's pretty weird.

Does anyone know of a possible solution? Or is it time to phone up Microsoft again?

Sounds like its an isolated problem, might be the graphics chip frying itself.

I would say open it up and see if there's an isolated head build up but that would void warranty. Send it back, shouldn't be overheating that quickly in our weather, there's much hotter places than here :p

You still in warranty? If not open her up and see if anything has come away or come loose!

Hmm, I've got no idea if I'm still in warranty. Probably not, providing you're on about the typical 12 month warranty, not the 3 year RROD one.

And I don't really want to open it up. I may be a very experienced IT guy, but I'm not that confident to go and open up the 360! :p

Sounds like the contact between the CPU or GPU and their headsink isn't great, or has degraded. Most likely will need to be repaired either by Microsoft or yourself if no longer under warranty... my falcon unit just RRoD on me a couple of weeks back ... without any warning (xbox appeared cool, air from the vents at the back wasn't hot).

Pity your so far away, I work on microchips and other stuff like that. Sorted a couple out with the same problem. Where the chip is embedded on the board some of the solder when it gets crazily hot melts slightly and touches other components shorting the whole thing out but not enough to shut it down.

The chips in question vary some are the graphics and there are also some random ones. If it's still in warranty send the bugger back if not open it up and have a lookie.

OK, I found when the 360 was bought. It was bought back in May 2007, so it's out of normal warranty, but the RROD warranty goes to 3 years, doesn't it? If so, I'll try and get it sent in.

Just say the RROD fault is intermittent if they say anything when you send it back! Grab a photo from somewhere online and put it in the box :)

MJ, I would send it to Microsoft since you still have 10 months left of warranty.

Chances are the contact between the CPU/GPU and heatsinks has just degraded somehow. You obviously checked the fans are still spinning?

Just ring them up, say it has RROD (3 red lights) and pack it up and sent it to them. The longest you will be waiting in around a week now from people who sent them in recently.

Yeah, the fans are still spinning fine.

I would ring them up and get it repaired, but my brother doesn't want to send it, just because he doesn't want to be without the 360. He's worse than me now. :p I can live without the 360 for at least a week; I've got a PS3, but he hates it, the bloody hypocrite.

aim a fan at her. other than that, not much you should do, just keep playing until something gives - and i surely hope it never does.

What intercooler are you using? Is it the regular one or the EX version?

Edit: I'd check your fans. It sounds like there might be something wrong with them as it should be quite hot at the back of the console from the fans pushing all the hot air out. If there is not a lot of hot air coming out, then the fans aren't doing their job.

Regular. I know about the risks of using it, as I stopped using it when the stories of them ruining the 360s started popping up, and even Microsoft said if your 360 is ruined by the Intercooler they'll void your warranty and refuse to repair it. Luckily, I've had no problems at all with it, and there are no visible scorch marks, on the Intercooler or inside the 360 power connector.

The regular one is total garbage. You're better off spending $20 and getting the EX version. That one actually works quite well. The regular version is just as likely to cause more problems than it fixes.

Well Microsoft sent me the UPS shipping label last night, and I got the 360 all packed up ready to go for today. Just gotta wait for UPS to come round and pick it up. As long as they repair the console to prevent the overheating issues, I'll be happy. I'll be even happier if they replace it with a Jasper one though! :p

I'm a bit unhappy though that they don't send out a coffin anymore, as I had to dig around in the garage looking for it, which I couldn't find, but I found a box that's just the right size for the 360, but I had to tape up a load of holes in the box (not due to wear-and-tear, they were already there). Thank god it comes back from Microsoft in a coffin though! :p

make a note of your serial number ;)

No worries about that. The 360 is registered on Xbox.com, so I can check the serial number there. ;)

Hmm, tempting after reading IGN's reviews of both models. I read somewhere that the Intercooler buggered up the 360s if there was a power cut; it turns out it's actually because the connection between the power cable and the Intercooler is loose as hell, which is true for me, but I've had no problems with it so far.

I fear it may cost a bit much though, as you're in America, so the shipping will cost more than the Intercooler EX itself. :p

EDIT: Actually, after looking through the prices over here, it's very close. I can get it at GAME.co.uk for ?12.99, and if it's $10 from you for the Intercooler EX itself, and then $10 for the shipping, it's nearly a pound cheaper.

If shipping will cost less than $10 and it'll take less than a fortnight to get here, you've got a deal.;))

Is it hot underneath the DVD drive?, then its probally the GPU or scaler chip.

Have you tried cleaning the fans?

If you do send it off use this website to track UPS: http://boxoh.com/.

Its more accurate than the public UPS website tracking.

When I sent mine off it arrived in Frankfurt, then got forwarded onto Prague and repaired there. From what I have read, in the Frankfurt centre they replace everything, but if it goes to Prague they just replace the problem part.

It wasn't hot under the DVD drive. And yes, I did try cleaning the fans.

Thanks for that! I just checked on there and it went on transit to Frankfurt at 6am this morning. :)
