BoDEAN
In rather huge news, we have received an email from the respected developers of the Free60 project who indicate that users should NOT update their 360's with the Summer update. Despite the update being dangerous as it overwrites the first stage bootloader, it will also block out a homebrew that the team are planning to release. So DON'T UPDATE!!!... http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=37109

bangbang023 Veteran Posted August 12, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 12, 2009 The update is mandatory to get on Live. I think I'll choose Live access over whatever these guys are offering.

Sethos
Had you guys actually bothered to take a look at the article, it's not just a warning from the developers of said homebrew, there is also a real warning in there. On Tuesday, Microsoft has released an Xbox 360 software update that overwrites the first stage bootloader of the system. Although therehave been numerous software updates for Microsoft's gaming console in the past, this is the first one to overwrite the vital boot block. Any failure while updating this will break the Xbox 360 beyond repair. Statistics from other systems have shown that about one in a thousand bootloader updates goes wrong, and unless Microsoft has a novel solution to this problem, this puts tens of thousands of Xboxes at risk. So this could mean a lot of 360's bricked.
mad_onion
Yeah you need the update to get on live and it's a bit late now most people who are going to care would have updated already.
Tharp Daddy
ONE IN A THOUSAND? Gee willickers! I'm pretty sure if your Xbox broke from their update that they would replace it.
Unrealistic
At this point, I'm creating a Micro PC capable of handling HD streams/Windows 7. I don't need "XBMC 360" anymore. I'd rather have a fully functioning 360. Sethos: keyword could. It's like a BIOS update essentially. Sure, if you unplug the damn thing, it would destroy the mobo, but come on. No one is that stupid (well I'm not gonna use this is a factual statement :p). The update could fail, but that's how core-system updates always work. The only defense you have is that this is a mandatory update.

And that is the entire point of this 'warning', just a bit of scaremongering justified by the fact that bootloader updates have a higher 'failure rate', nothing else :) Telling people not to update is a bit excessive though. Kushan
I was going to post this, but I wasn't sure how the mods were going to handle it. I think homebrew is a wonderful thing, it'll be interesting to see what comes out of this.
BoDEAN
ONE IN A THOUSAND? Gee willickers! I'm pretty sure if your Xbox broke from their update that they would replace it. Wrong. Older xbox 360s that are not under warrenty anymore, you end up scraping. I was going to post this, but I wasn't sure how the mods were going to handle it. I think homebrew is a wonderful thing, it'll be interesting to see what comes out of this. Wouldn't be surprised if this thread gets closed .... as people take "homebrew" and misinterpret that with the forbidden "W" word. Anyways.............. Rudy
I'll wait and see, my 360 has been whining at me to run an update since the beginning of the year, so a few months won't hurt
Unrealistic
The thread is fine. OSx86 is allowed on Neowin, so I don't see why discussion of homebrew on 360 wouldn't be allowed. I do, however, think this thread should be renamed to something less sensationalized.
ahhell
Non-story. There is always a chance at a firmware bricking a piece of hardware. Nice try with the "Oh NOES!!1!1 Micro$oft is tryin' to kill the homebrewzzz!!"
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted August 12, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted August 12, 2009 I was gonna hook my 360 back online to get the update but I think I'll leave it off in case we get some good hombrewz. As for the bricking there's always a chance when you modify the bios but if the update is sound any bricks will be due to out of the ordinary circumstances. Nice try with the "Oh NOES!!1!1 Micro$oft is tryin' to kill the homebrewzzz!!" Way to not read the story, bub. This isn't about the update potentially bricking 360's, it's about the possibility of homebrew ;)

sn00pie
yeah, I'd stay away from it until the homebrew guys tell you its OK to update to it. Goes back to playing Madden 10' :pirate:
Kushan
Just so people know, this hack requires a JTAG adapter and a bit of fiddling around with the insides of the 360. It's not a modchip, but its not for the feint of heart.
Elessar
Its not necessarily about bricking but rather about not being able to run homebrew (and most likely pirated games). I saw another article about the same thing and this is supposedly the first update from MS that has messed with the boot files.
