SMELTN
You know the only thing I am really interested in doing is, being able to play my 360 games without the stupid CD being in the drive each time, and allowing me to run an os on my xbox would be pretty cool. But honestly I have a laptop, with a video cable and speaker connection.. Thats how we watch Hulu on our TV now since my 14 day trial to PlayOn ran out. t0mbi
yeah that would be cool. chuck in some good emulators and im sold :p n00b question...if an emulator is written for PC, is it easier to convert to the 360? as apposed to say, the wii? acnpt
Being able to play my 360 games without the stupid CD being in the drive each time Not going to happen, you could just rent a game once. Having random testing would be good though, like 1 in 4/5 plays it would ask for the disk. Although some games you can now purchase on Xbox Live, so you don't even get a disk. The addition of a simple web browser, with flash and silverlight support would be good!, blackberrys in the future are going to have that, yet they can't even get it on an xbox. I believe converting from the PC to the 360/Wii is about the same amount of effort, but it depends on the homebrew libraries available. The Wii has been hacked for a while, so the homebrew library will be quite mature and feature packed. The 360's library (libxenon) is still fairly basic but once that matures, it'll probably be about the same effort. However, porting from the Wii to the 360 will be easier as the custom GUIs and such can almost certainly be reused (whereas the windowing system from the PC probably can't be). The Wii's mature homebrew status combined with the healthy homebrew scene from the original xbox (which will probably help any budding developers out there) will probably mean we'll see lots of cool homebrew soon. Word is, people are already working on getting XBMC running on it. I reckon the 360 is even capable of emulating a PS2, wouldn't that be funny? Now, does anyone know a good place in the UK to pick up cheap electronic bits? Resisters, wires, serial ports, etc.?
acnpt
Now, does anyone know a good place in the UK to pick up cheap electronic bits? Resisters, wires, serial ports, etc.? A local independent electronic shop, ebay, maplins or rs components. Also try google there are a couple other british online stores, I used one but I can't remember what it was called  Reminds me of being back in college(A-level electronics), we always took more than we needed from the store-rooms
Kushan
I don't know of any local independant shops around here that do that kind of thing =\ However, I DID get a ?25 amazon voucher today and they seem to stock everything I'll need =D

acnpt
I bet its fun soldering onto a xbox :p Could you post or pm a link to some more info, I can't be bothered to use google
Kushan
I've just sent a PM to gigapixels asking him if it's ok to go to that kind of detail in this thread, if he says it's ok I'll post what I can =)
Kushan
Well it has been over a week and giga hasn't replied, so I'm going to go ahead and post a bit more info on this. Moderators, if I cross the line please keep in mind that I DID actually try and contact you guys first, before doing this =P Anyhoo, the "hack" I'm going to be attempting is detailed here (Once again, I'd like to stress that this hack in no way endorses, promotes or even enables piracy). There are basically 2 stages to it. Firstly, you solder a bunch of wires (and an optional diode) to the motherboard connecting to a serial adapter (aka old printer port). That allows you to dump the contents of your 360's flash memory - the NAND. This isn't actually particularly useful by itself, its all encrypted. The second stage of the hack involves soldering 3 330ohm resisters to a different part of the motherboard. This is actually the real "meat" of the hack, the bit that makes it all work. By soldering these resisters, it allows us to flash and run a different flash dump onto our 360's NAND. This flash dump contains "XeLL", a very basic but functional Linux kernel. Without the 3 resisters, we'd be able to flash it just fine, but it wouldn't boot. From here we can do lots of interesting things, such as getting the CPUKey from the 360 (Which allows us to decrypt our NAND dump and get us some nice info about our 360). With that, you can change your 360's region code if you wanted to play region locked import games by modifying the decrypted NAND. If, for some reason, your 360's DVD drive had died or been erased, you could even recover your DVD key so you could install a new one. Right now though, we're interested in homebrew so for the moment XeLL stays. That's the theory, anyway, right now my spare 360 has been disassembled and all the bits and pieces I need are all ready to go. I plan to take pics as I attempt this and I'll be posting them even if it all goes horribly horribly wrong. Unless I die or something. Wish me luck! chrismaddern
I've got to admit, that with XNA, I feel no compulsion to run homebrew on it...
Kushan
What happened was that I discovered how much I fail at soldering. Not all is lost though, I haven't totalled the whole thing yet, I just need to practice a bit more.

You can do it right now, if you want, just need to solder some bits and pieces (Xenon boards only atm, Zephyr, Falcon and Jasper will follow soon). Waylander
360 for homebrew seems pointless imo, anything that could be done on 360 (stuff that comes to mind is emus and media) can be done better on a ion platform board in a smaller box with less powerusage and noise, less effort as well. Yep, but some people have old xboxs available, and don't/can't buy a new ion or atom pc. Plus its also the fun of 'modding' something. Totally forgot about this thread :pinch: . Kushan, Might be that your using a crap soldering iron??
Kushan
It might just be! It might also be because I've not soldered anything in over 10 years and even then, that was just an LED and a resistor.

You'd be able to fully emulate a PS2 on one of those? How cheap is it (it must be less then ?200 and come with a Windows OS, as there is no Linux PS2 emu)?
