Wolfenstein

Hello dudes, had a couple hours on the new Wolfenstein yesterday evening. Thought you may be interested to hear some initial impressions. First of all, being an Id product, although developed by Raven, you may be expecting some exciting visuals. This is sadly not the case. The graphics/visuals can only be described as mediocre, I don't really have much more to say on that as I was sorely dissapointed. Physics are pants, very basic, the environment however does consist of a few destructable items such as tables and chairs, barrells and crates, bottles etc and its nice to see machine gun fire tearing through it, explosions however are laughable..

Action is simple run and gun style stuff, very linear, scripted throughout, you have a little compass at the top like the early Medal Of Honor's indicating your objective and you can pretty much just sprint through the first couple levels that I played using the MP40. Between actual levels there is now a very small sandbox style town with various little safehouses and 'blackmarkets' at the blackmarket you can exchange gold for Weapon upgrades unlocked by collecting intel throughout the main missions.

Storyline is laughable, as is the voice acting, these guys are blatently not Germans! There is a 'Z' at the start of every sentance, if I were actually a German myself I would no doubt be offended, however I'm not so it's slightly comical. There are of course as you may have read in other reviews, some special abilities which you unlock through the course of the game, I've only unlocked 1 so far and that is the ability to enter 'The Veil' like some sort of parrallel realm similar to 'Prey', remember that game? In the 'Veil' everything turns a tad green with like some green energy stuff warping round it and some strange flying head things called 'Geists' flying around, which proceed to attack you for no reason, also if you shoot them they explode. So upon seeing enemies you can enter 'The Veil' which also sort of slows time and allows you to shoot even more Nazi's ridiculously easily.

Something to mention is that despite how diabolically **** this game is I can genuinely see myself sticking with it just because shooting people appears to be endlessly satisfying. Take Farcry2 for example, the game was absoloutely sprawling, huge, gorgeous graphics, but combat felt soooooo... flat? You know, it was a bit empty, there wasn't even any decent blood or ragdoll effects. A bit of decapitation or violence never hurt anyone, theres a little bit of that in Wolfenstein.

One final gripe is that the bodies dissapear the minute you turn around. Horrendous, this is next gen? I think not. I expected a lot better from a franchise like this. I could give it a 1/10 through sheer dissapointment, but if I had never played any previous Wolfenstein games a genuine score would be 6/10.

Dont hold your breath, sadly have not played Multiplayer.

Ps. Any genuine questions please ask.

Does it honestly look as bad as the leaked videos portray?

Does it feel like playing a dated shooter?

Is it worth getting paid to buy?-->

1. Its not AS BAD as the videos, but it is BAD. lol

2. Unfortunatley, there's no innovation here. Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the PC is a much better shooter

3. No. Is it worth a rental? Yes. (Bare in mind, the multiplayer may indeed be worth a purchase but I cannot comment.)

Considering your other thread...

In my opinion, it's not great. But it's not bad either. The story is as you'd expect. Daft. The weapons and combat on the other hand are rather satisfying while it has the clich?d powers of damage, shield and slow mo. They all worth rather well and the game feels a bit like FEAR set in the 1940's. The veil does have issues though. Noticeably, a frame rate drop as you shift. Which breaks up the action so much so I find my self trying to avoid using it where I can. The creatures in the veil can also be used as floating explosive barrels taking out any nazis near them in an attempt to make it a little less of a gimmick.

There is a big dollop of exploration letting you wander about a mission hub looking for money, tomes and intel for various upgrades. All of which are mighty useful. The weapons them selfs range from MP40's & a rifle to Tesla cannons and plasma beams. Every weapon having about 6 upgrades. Which, for example, turn the rifle in to a silenced sniper rifle and the Tesla cannon in to a room clearing lightning gun lal quake.

Once you get away from the hub and set off on a mission you do go to varied locations farms, hospitals, underground bunkers and a zeppelin. All consist of go here destroy this. A glorified corridor shooter. But at least at the end of it you end up with a new power or piece of weaponry to distract you from the monotony of it all.

Multiplayer I can't comment on as well no one is playing it at the moment. But I suspect this is where the game will shine. It feels much like it's predecessors. If this is carried on to the MP. I can see it gaining a cult following like ET. Well see in the next few weeks though.

All in all, a nice distraction, a strong decent weekend rental but I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Hahaha, I've said before and I'm going to say it once again - Raven do not make good games, period! I've preordered this game and I'm going to play it, but I'm going to sell it on eBay the minute I'm done with it.

Why don't you just rent it for like 1/4 the price and save yourself the trouble of selling it..

Id say 99.99% you got a Pirated version. This really sux for the hard work that Game developers have put in. Then you will complain about the medicore game. Bah Humbug !

You can't rent games for the PC, which is the only platform an FPS should be played on given the choice.

? It sucks for the company's shareholders. We get paid one way or another. I don't care as a developer, but I would if I were the owner.

I have also 'stumbled' upon this game game..somehow. It is actually a lot better than i thought it would be, mind you, i had very, very low expectations for this game lol. Its an easy enough game, very basic, controls are good (same as COD).

I was looking forward to finishing this game, boosting my gamerscore along the way, but i checked the achievement list and 80% of the achievements are for multiplayer!!! FRIGGIN LAME!!

Agreed, was disappointed to read they are all multiplayer almost.

Especially when they screwed up MP and made it completely different from prior games (N)

the single player campaign is pretty good. nice mix of missions, decent storyline, some goofy voice acting and the action is quite solid. i like how they made it not hard at all this time, maybe uber is more of a challenge, but hard is just right. the visuals aren't bad, except the character animations, which look too stiff. i would say this game is a cross between The Darkness and Far Cry 2, if that helps, and a reasonable 7/10.

The MP is crap, though. just simple run and gun and suffers from terrible lag. it's always one team winning 60:12 or something, and then you look at their connection and understand why. i got my first five kills without even trying, and the next match i only got one and died twelve. So no wonder those guys all got laid off. The achievements being mostly for MP makes sense, they're desperate, figured no one would play this online. So far seems they have enough people.
