Wolfenstein

So it seems like the general consensus is to rent the game for the single player if you're in the mood for a brief distraction, but don't bother with the multiplayer, and definitely don't buy it. That's actually quite a shame. I know that Activision likes to force the developers working under them to finish their games regardless of quality, but it hurts when something like this happens to such a beloved franchise.

And I'm not a fan of multiplayer achievements either, unless they're feats that you would be accomplishing anyways (such as killing 100 total, or going on a 10-player killing streak). In this case, its sounds like the multiplayer is so bad that you wouldn't bother either way.

Yup you pretty much summed the game up perfectly.

Avoid this game, it doesn't even deserve the title Wolfenstein.

that's debatable, the single player campaign is quite good. actually worth a purchase if you have the money. the MP is indeed bad, but if you're plonking the cash then might as well give it a shot. and this is definitely a Wolfenstein game, it's even got the occasional "mein leibe!" from a dying German officer...this isn't the novel freshness of the 1992 title, for sure, but it's not bad.

Well I'm glad the wool hasn't been pulled over everyone's eyes..;)

Goodness knows what Raven have spent the past three years doing, but surely this utterly banal shooter isn't it. What, it is? Cripes. Actually, Wolfie deserves a bit better than that disdainful brush-off. Only a little bit though. Let's rewind a little. As Id's immortal-hero-with sexuallysuggestive- initials BJ Blazkowicz, you're once again roped into an alternative WWII where the blasted Bosche have uncovered a window into a supernatural realm known as the Veil.

Before you get to wade through that particular sea of mediocrity though, you'll meet a bunch of heroic German Resistance types with comedy accents 'Allo 'Allo's Herr Flick himself would be proud of, before being introduced to the blasty mechanics via a train yard shootout that later takes a mightily cool turn for the bizarre.

Up to that point, we'd actually pondered aloud whether this was going to confound all expectations and turn out to be rather... swish. Trouble is, by blowing its supernatural load so early, BJ's hurried and clich?d inauguration into the mysteries of the Veil forty-five minutes or so later fails to resonate in the way that it perhaps should, instead dissolving painfully into 'this power lets you see an enemy's weak spot' or 'this power lets you slow time so you can dodge a sub-Indiana Jones trap'.

Even the filter effect whenever you enter the netherworld is a letdown, the sub-Bioshock spooky baddies and cheesily obvious gameplay facets even more so. And it only gets worse from there.

VEILED THREAT As a WWII shooter to trump the likes of Medal of Honor, Wolfenstein ironically shows promise. The authentic olde weapons all feel weighty, environments go to hell in pleasingly destructive fashion and dying Nazis sport a range of hideous fatalities (catch a Jerry in the neck or face with a swathe of bullets and you might even catch yourself grimacing in sympathy).

We also like the swapping out of explosive barrels with gooey ones that play havoc with gravity in a localised area when detonated, but it's a rare thumbs-up in a sea of middle fingers. Ultimately, Wolfenstein brings very few genuinely novel ideas to the FPS table, unforgivable given both the lengthy development time and the legacy of the IP. It's not terrible by any stretch but it is utterly forgettable and, even though its belated release comes at a time when most shooters have packed their bags and headed for the safety of 2010, simply doesn't pack near enough pizzazz to stand out from the throng. Fans of BJs everywhere wail as one as another once-proud franchise bites the dust.

oh yeah CVG, from the people who brought you Conan the Librarian and Julian Rignall...heh heh. real authoritative. look at me, wannabe Raven shareholder!

it's a 7/10, 4/10 if you're in it for the multiplayer.

All I know is that if they stick to their word and loose to Madden (which they will), the game will be free.

I'm pretty sure that it's the other way around. That is, Wolfenstein has to outsell Madden 10 in the month of August in order for Raven to pay up:

Meanwhile, here's another scathing review of the game:

Nothing can top Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Multiplayer was flawless, had a big community.. You will never see that again.. due to the direction the developers went with this game, Looks okay but lacks.

Transformers 2 was fun, that's what gaming's all about - fun. Not one upmanship. Class dismissed ;)

Admittedly, it was also handy for the old gamerscore.

I'm tempted to pick this up tonight when I go to get Batman. We'll see, it's getting a lot of mixed reviews. Maybe I'll wait until it's cheap...

I looked at this game yesterday whilst picking up 'classic' forza 2 and too human (TH for ?5...give it a go.) and I know a friend who has it on the PC, but after reading this review I think I'll hold off, maybe try and rent it for a day or so and see what it's like, but if the MP is shockingly bad as is the impression I am getting, then I wouldn't even look at this game twice really, sad but true for a wolfenstein.

to us dinosaurs the wolfenstein series isnt about mp, the first one defined the series, not the return in 2001. it's all about ott nazis and the occult, so this game gets an easy pass. i'd rent it first, tho.

Sadly it's not worth $60 to hear some recycled lines from german soldiers. You judge the game by itself, not how good the past games were. I've waited 8 years or something for this game and I'd be first to praise it if it had anything going for it, believe me. I've not even mentioned MP because it's that god awful.

Rent this game, save your money for the AAA titles in the next few months instead. Trust me.

won't be a hypocrite, it's a rental for sure. the single player campaign is good but short - they even give you points for the obvious under 12hour finish. DM, i'm drunk on Lech beer and so do love you dearly, but you seem overly bent on going out of your way to make this seem like a terrible game, i understand you don't like it, but think you're making an effort to be harsh with it. it ain't bad at all in my book, and it's a book with lots of games chalked up in it. but yes, this isn't worth full price, simply rent it and do the single player. now onwards eighth bottle!

EDIT: for fairness sake there's nothing recyvled about it, it's not like they took the same sprites and voice samples fer crissake. an homage isn't a recycling, it's much more than that. the story is more of the same, but it works. i think anyone that liked Prey, The Darkness or Far Cry 2 will have a good time .

I have this on PC, and I'm loving it. Feels really good, and I LOVE the guns and effects for some of the veil stuff. Plus, it looks way better on PC than the console version (I've played the 360 version, just would never buy it for the 360).

Well, I for one got a kick out of hearing one of the soldiers scream "Mein leben!" as he was going down :D Besides that it passes the time as an average FPS.

ironman that's because you're also part of the elder generation, i presume? for the old timeys this is a better deal, young gamers won't see it the same way, they see an average shooter and tend to compare it to 2001 Wolfie.

there's also the buzz factor - the collective decided to write this game off as mediocre, so most are overlooking the positives, like tongue in cheek story, solid visuals, fun action and interesting tidbits like the intelligence folders. Conversely, the collective decided to label Batman Arkham a good game, so shortcomings such as a decidedly static world (except plants that animate in the middle of an office - where's the breeze coming from, B-Man?) and suspect AI are overlooked and get a pass.

There's no harm in any of this, to each gamer his own. i just wish they also included "achtung!" and the other samples, having the Germans speak accented English was perhaps not the best move.

...and how about "Schutzstaffel!" I can still hear the item pick up sound and that scratchy door opening.

Of course, my first Wolfenstein encounter was on an Apple ][e which looked like this:

Ahhh.. the good ol' days. Thanks for calling me old, BTW ;)

I was having a private chat with a friend earlier over XBL while we both played the SP of this game.

I got frustrated because I couldn't find ONE piece of intel in the train station (I'd already beat the mission, I just wanted the intel for the upgrades) so I went and looked up a guide (so sue me). While reading through various forusm, they all kept mentioning a "Freezing" bug.

So there I am playing the game and I said to my friend "here, what's all this about a freezing bug in the game?". It was at that precise moment I discovered the damn bug myself.

That's how I felt for the most part. This is quite simply not a Wolfenstein game in my eyes, and I shall never look at it as such. Ever.

heheh "schutztaffel". What did the navy officers say? i don't know how to write it in English, it's the German word for "spy". And if you're old, i older...and just look at gunner, he even remembers the original Science Ninja Team aka Battle of the Planets
