It's official: Rage is a rip-off of Fallout!

Recommended Posts

Just because Doom has bit the bullet and you ****ed up Wolfenstein, you need to start pinching ideas???

'Rage takes place in the near future of Earth, where the planet has been devastated by the massive asteroid Apophis (id is taking an actual asteroid that is on a near-collision course with Earth and making the supposition that it's much larger than scientists currently believe). With doomsday upon humanity, the governments of the world band together to form the Eden Project, a system where scientists, researchers, engineers, and military personnel are frozen underground in 12 to 16-person groups known as Arks.'

Project Eden and the Geck???????????? ID Software call theirs... the eden project,

And instead of a Vault... its an ark...

If I was working at Bethesda and saw the gamplay vids to this **** I would be filing a lawsuit right now. ****ing jokers.

Are you actually going to try and defend this bull****. Someone at ID has ran out of imagination, seen the success of the revival of the Fallout franchise and jumped right on the bandwagon!

Sheesh, the fanboyism in this thread is sickening, nobody owns the survivors in post WW3/Apocalypse earth franchise, and who knows, it may just be a good game?

There is very little in the gaming industry that's innovative, and really, Fallout is a success, why wouldn't more go that way?

Sigh, shortsightedness.

First of all, it's just a game, relax.

Secondly, if you want to get technical about Fallout, then id (and every post apocolpytic game since Fallout 1) stole the idea of going underground and surviving only to return to the surface of the Earth to find mutants and civilization still standing somewhat. Plus, this has been a science fiction staple for decades. So, I guess Bethesda stole that also from 50's and 60's movies. And the original Fallout devs also, omg.

Come on man, I know your a big Fallout fan but seriously. You do know that Fallout stole from Mad Max right? :)

Yes this is true, I am also a crazy mad max fan. lol.

But fallout was more of a homage to mad max.

And the Fallout license was physically bought and acquired by Bethesda, they revived it and done us all a huge service in doing so.

For ID to come along and milk it, its just sad.

Its like Activision coming out tomorrow and saying they are doing a game called waterworld in which a man find a huge underwater city called acquaria trapped in a 1950s era with crackheads running around it and the player has the ability to shoot lightening and fire at people!

yay Apophis!

...oh wait, he's dead :(

Well the actual Asteroid is named after our good snake god after all (supposedly).

Sucks how Ba'al de-brained him though eh? lol

It's best if you don't bring that into a thread. Your point becomes a lot less solid because of this.

I wouldn't be surprised if several games hop on the same sort of genre, but it's a far cry from that to call the game a rip-off, just because it uses the same concepts.

@FoxieFoxie Thats ridiculous, Fallout 1 & 2 were originally isometric you joker. And Doom is set in space.

@John I disagree, its not just the same concepts, its the same concept all together with different branding. Its like me releasing a 3 stripe trouser range called badidas.

id isn't milking anything though. The settings may be similar (not really though) but the games are totally different. Whereas Fallout 3 is an action-RPGFPS combo, Rage is a racing/FPS combo. I know of no RPG type systems in Rage (at least nothing I've read so far indicates this).

Not to mention the fact that Zenimax owns both Bethesda and id now. I seriously doubt they'd let id "milk" Fallout as a setting or plot device if Bethesda was there complaining considering how big Bethesda is now.

It's called Eden Project, so what?

Their purpose is to bring life/make a fresh start so Eden is an appropriate name. Or did someone copyright the name Eden?

I just dont know, its not that its a total rip off, its just that after all this secrecy etc I was expecting something really original and it turns out its just fallout 3 with racing cars and a different name badge. @Ricardo If someone came out rapping tomorrow named thin shady. You wouldn't find that slightly disturbing?

Eden is a common word with a very defined meaning. Slim Shady isn't :p

Well you could call most FPS games a rip off of wolfenstein/doom as most dont really break the mould so to speak

sounds like fanboyism if you ask me. please cut the caps too

Eh, dunno where you've been the last 2 years or so but id always had it set after some sort of cataclysm with driving and racing (and upgrading your car) since the beginning. It isn't like they announced Rage in 2007 with nothing else and then just yesterday you knew about the plot. Hell the original trailer from last year showed pretty much the same thing as this year. Just the new trailer shows the plot somewhat (instead of just a general 'the world has ended' thing) and more of the racing and finally some FPS gameplay.

@Stezo, I dont see any caps, but out.

@LOC Yeah, the plot, thats what I got issues with! Not the look/feel. Post apocalyptic is good! But come on, its gotta have an original story. Theyve just gone, OK. Instead of nukes well have an asteroid, instead of project eden well have the eden project and instead of a vault well have the ark.

See my point?

Rage is not a ripoff of Fallout. It just so happens to be set in a post-apocalyptic future. And for it to be post-apocalyptic, a cataclysmic event would have to take place. Some examples are global nuclear war, an asteroid/meteor collision, or decimation by a ruthless alien invasion force. There are only so many ways you can tell the same (or similar) story.

Couldn't you argue the same for Prototype and Infamous? It really doesn't matter, both are good games, no doubt the same will be here...
