A major milestone was reached for Halo 3 this week as it became only the 35th title in history to sell 10 million copies worldwide and the first on an Xbox console

Halo 3 is the first Xbox title (on either the original or 360) to break 10 million copies worldwide as of the 8th August 2009 according to VGChartz research. This makes the title only the 35th game ever to reach this mark, the full list can be found here.

After launching to an astonishing 3.8 million copies in it's first week (a record which still stands) and with an average critic score of 9.6, long-term success for Halo 3 was assured. Nearly two years after launch, the game is still a regular in the worldwide weekly top 30 selling around 30,000 copies per week. In fact, the only reason why Halo 3 is likely to drop out of the top 30 in the coming months is due to the release of Halo 3: ODST - a side quest focusing on the Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. Preorders for that title are already well over a million in the US alone so it looks like Bungie will have another huge hit on their hands.

Halo: Combat Evolved started the series back in 2001 where it launched alongside the original Xbox console and became a suprise smash hit - selling consistently until the launch of Halo 2 on the way to nearly 6.5 million units in total. The Halo franchise now stands at nearly 30 million total sales (including PC versions, add-ons, map packs, Halo Wars). The three main Halo games have sold nearly 25 million copies combined with each outselling the previous title (all figures in millions):

So how far can Halo 3 go? As stated above, we feel that the upcoming release of ODST will slow Halo 3 sales, but another 1-2 million is still realistic, especially with budget releases and bundles. We expect ODST to sell well initially but ultimately end up at around half of Halo 3's total. Halo Reach on the other hand could be the next Halo game to challenge for ten million copies, especially being the last Halo title from Bungie. Where the series goes from there, and how many more Halo Wars style spinoffs we see is something only Microsoft knows at this point.

Halo 3 is currently available with Fable II in the "Games of the year" Xbox360 Elite hardware bundle. Halo 3: ODST launches on September 22nd and you can read the exclusive VGChartz interview with the development team here.

I find it interesting that the best game of the series sold the fewest copies.

Halo 2 was a steaming pile.

Halo 3 was meh at best.
