PS3 cut 'won't worry' Microsoft

Xbox exec Chris Lewis says 360 is in a good place as industry braces for double price cut

Microsoft's Chris Lewis has said that any possible PS3 price drop from Sony at Gamescom next week won?t affect its plans ? which are now widely expected to include a price drop of its own.

?We are in a good place in terms of the value we offer,? the Xbox EMEA VP told MCV.

?We have a plan and a rhythm we are marching to ? and we won?t be knocked off that cadence in terms of what the opposition might do.?

Sony is believed to be preparing to unveil its brand new PS3 Slim next Tuesday at the Gamescom show in Germany.

In addition, MCV has been led to believe that Microsoft will be countering Sony's move with a price cut of its own ? most likely scrapping the Pro Xbox 360 SKU and dropping the Elite 360 by ?60 to ?169.99.

It'll be a very interesting twist in the console war if the 360 Elite becomes cheaper than the Wii! :)

I don't think that would matter. The 360 Pro has undercut the Wii for quite a while now and regardless of it having a far superior of features and games, it undeservedly still lags behind.

True. The 360 Arcade has five Arcade games bundled with it, but no hard drive. If the 360 Elite, with its 120GB hard drive and maybe a game or two bundled, drops below the Wii's ?180 price tag, a lot of people are gonna have to stop and take notice.

Nintendo have been the most cheapskate company of this generation. The console price hasn't dropped one penny since it launched two and a half years ago, the controllers are the most expensive, and the hardware in it is third-rate. Or second-rate if you compare it with the PS2 and the Xbox.:pp

Technically, wasn't the Xbox still more powerful than the Wii? I'm sure I read an article on that once, maybe I'm wrong though.

No, I'm fairly certain you're right. I kept hearing that the Wii has most of the hardware that the Gamecube had.

That would make sense I think. If the Wii is similar to the GameCube, and the Xbox is more powerful than the GameCube, then surely the Xbox is more powerful than the Wii.

In any case, I wish the Wii tumble just so people would stop harping on about it being the most amazing thing when almost all of those exact people rarely ever play on a Wii lol.

Obviously, next cash cow for MS will be Natal, so they could just sell XBox for $99 and Natal for $399

lol if they sell Natal for $399 i wont be getting one.

Agreed. I think the hype has actually died down at last though thanks to yet another E3 failure from Nintendo. Sure, I keep seeing Wii ads all over the telly (mostly the lying cash cow add-on that is Wii MotionPlus), but I haven't heard anyone barking on about the Wii at all.

Yeah I guess there's a lot less now than last year for example. The quicker it becomes irrelevant the better :p

if the PS3 price goes down to 300-400$ itll be way more than microshaft can chew .

Microsoft is making tons through software purchases which PS3 users do on average less often than Xbox 360 users, and considering there are 7.5 million more Xbox 360s in homes than PS3s at the moment, Microsoft has nothing to worry about.

So being first to release the console paid off for MS in the long run. Can't say the same about Sony though, by the time the next console is due hopefully Sony will be where MS is today.

About PS3 being expensive, they're trying to make up for what they lost when they released the console, PS3 was selling under $300.00 for what's it took to build (I think it was about $8xx.00). Sony's not making much thru software sales, and practically none from PSN. If they keep reducing the price then PS3 would be little successful but a huge loss moneywise just to keep the PS name in the market sony.

Compare the Wii to the 360 and it's a similar story in terms of software sales. The last time I saw (which was over a year ago), the attach rate (the average ratio of games sold per console sold) for the 360 was about 6.5, and the Wii was less than 1!
