id Promises Doom 4 News at QuakeCon 2010

Recommended Posts

Those hoping id Software would today reveal more information about the next Doom entry are bound to be disappointed, as CEO Todd Hollenshead used this year's QuakeCon press conference to promise more details at next year's event.

"When we show it to you, you're gonna love it," he promised the clamoring crowd.

Studio technical director John Carmack later added that the project represents "the most tightly managed approach" that the company has ever used, as, thanks to continuing work on the id Tech 5 engine and Rage, some of the development tools and technology for Doom 4 already exist and will not need to be crafted in tandem with the game.

Honestly, I miss the Doom 1, 2, and Quake 1 days. Back when there were only a handful of FPS games and people had just as much fun making custom levels and addons as playing the game and playing other people's levels and addons.

These days if you are interested in making your own custom level, by the time you polish it off to today's standards all the players have moved on to other FPS games. The FPS market is just saturated and I've lost interest in it.

Also, the online multiplayer FPS community has all gone to Halo 3 on XBox 360. I'm not really into XBox 360 FPS games...

Anyway, I thought Doom 3 was kind of fun. The last boss in the expansion was ridiculously hard though. I'll probably check this one out when it is released.

Doom 3 was the most uninspired and overrated game of all time.

It'll have to be damn amazing for me to give even an inkling of a crap about Doom4

Definitely over-hyped. It also kept getting pushed back, which hurt it. When the first videos emerged it seemed like it was going to be awesome...by the time it was released there were a handful of FPS games available that were on par or had better graphics and gameplay than Doom 3.

I found the game to be fun enough to play through and beat...the hell levels were really cool actually. The corridor **** at the beginning got old fast. It didn't have NEAR the replayability that Doom 1 and 2 had when they were released.

Cant fault doom 3 for its storyline and voice acting though which were top notch on par with system shock. The repetitive action is the only thing that lets it down .

Definitely playing this one just for the story , Probably in god mode if its the same old action.

NO MORE FLASH LIGHT !!! :(

I don't mind flashlughts, just don't force me to turn it off to shoot; let me have the flashlight shining while I attack (like F.E.A.R.). A few more brightly lit up areas to add contrast to yoru environments (like the original Doom and Doom II did, as well as F.E.A.R.) would be welcome too; it also gives a good oppertunity to really see and enjoy the environment's graphics (like you could at the beginning of Doom 3, but not nearly as often later in the game).

The flashlight was brilliant, the game was supposed to be dark and spooky.

There's a difference between being dark and spooky and being obnoxiously dark and predictable.

doom4 is using id tech5 if i recall correctly. carmack's recent discussions on id tech5 is that it's no longer a completely dynamic lit game. look at some of the indoor shots of Rage and it should give you an idea of how the lighting will be.

anyone have thoughts on where doom4 will take place? (hell on) earth maybe?

Uh, the dozens and dozens of high quality voice recordings that completely filled out the story and added to the spooky environment to the game.

Really it's exactly the same as Bioshock, you find voice logs throughout the game and listen to them, only Doom 3 did a better job and Bioshock was praised for it's innovative storytelling.

I think far too many people just went into it not even looking for a story because it's Doom.

The voice logs are what you're referring to? Sorry, but I don't consider that the hallmark of a great story. Doom 3's story was nothing like Bioshock. Bioshock's storytelling was praised because, in addition to the logs, it had a great atmosphere, and great characters that lended themselves to the story. The more you progressed, the more you naturally learned -- regardless of whether or not you listened to the audio logs (similar to Half-Life 2). And Bioshock's story was far more compelling than Doom 3's.
