Sega Shutting Down Chromehounds Servers

Recommended Posts

Sega is officially shutting down Chromehounds' online component, putting an end to the brief, troubled life of the online mech sim. Fans have until January to make their final runs, and bid goodbye to their squadmates. "We regret to inform everyone that the Chromehounds online service will be closing on January 6, 2010. At this time, all online components for Chromehounds will no longer be accessible and the game will only be available for play in offline modes," Sega said in a post on their official forums.

"We would like to thank everyone in the Chromehounds community for their passion and support over the past 3 years of service. Please enjoy the remaining time with the game."

Chromehounds was released back in 2006, and its fans have had to suffer substantial network problems ever since. Nevertheless, it managed to pick up a small, dedicated following, many of whom expressed regret in the same forum.

If you're part of that dedicated following, you'd better get playing. You only have until January 6 until Sega turns off the lights for good.

I don't play the game and I couldn't care less about it shutting down, but I had thought MS hosted all the games on Live? Imagine trying to play CoD4 online in a couple of years just for nostalgia's sake, only to find Activision has shut down the servers!!! :o

CoD4 use one of the players as server for all or most all matches. only the matching server are hosted externally, and I believe that these are using the live servers themselves for at least the matchmaking but possibly also the stats and stuff, but I'm not sure on those.

Well that's good to hear in CoD4's case. I'm still surprised that ALL games aren't hosted by Live though. I mean, this kind of thing is expected on PC, but I didn't think the multiplayer component of a game being shut down on XBOX was even possible.

EA does it a lot. It's one disadvantage of using dedicated servers: one day they have to be switched off, because console games don't get the same long-term usage as PC games (BF2 is still as popular as ever). As said above the matchmaking servers are what you're paying for when you buy Gold membership.

Dissapointing for me, since I have played it since its release. Sure its nowhere near as active as it was when it came out (the servers crashed from too many players), but it is still my second favorite mech game next to MechWarrior 2: Mercs. Losing online capability in this game is basically shooting it in the foot. The campaign was a giant tutorial for the online anyways.

Wow I didn't know Sega still had stuff going on. I was reading through the forums and seen people had posted petitions to keep alot of things such as servers, game sequels, etc. Good to see the Sega community is still active and hasn't given up. (Y)
