District 9 (2009)

This is not what the movie is about. It's a cinematic representation and twist on the problems current South Africans are facing. If you actually do research on what this movie is about, you will probably have a better appreciation for it. Some things are supposed to be left open. I think a sequel would also ruin it.

I honestly thought it was a good movie and give it an 8/10.

Precisely what I thought about the movie. (Y)

Sorry double post (couldn't edit)

I think most people's problem with the movie is they expected something like Independence Day or something similar. Pretty much a movie with big explosions, visual effects, and action. If you go into this movie expecting this, you WILL be disappointed.

I thought this was a brilliant movie. Being South African myself, I must admit, I laughed my ass off during the first half.

The part where the main guy says that his promotion is not related to his family, and then showing his father-in-law is his boss, was really funny.

Also, a lot of the jokes/references were probably lost on non-South Africans.

The story I thought was very good. Its been a while since I watched a good sci-fi movie. I just hope they dont ruin the franchise by making a sequel...

i went in knowing clearly what the message was going to be' but that message seemed lost halfway through. i also thought it pretty silly that they were treated so lowly' even though they were obvisously far more superior intellect wise. a good movie' just not great.

The Original Thread creator gave this movie a 1/10... wow.. Did he/She see it on acid or something?

this movie was great, The character that played Wikus can defiantly act.. and I sure hope to see him in more movies in the near future.

District 9 was bloody well done movie, from the sounds & CG to the acting. 9/10

Saw it the other week, 'tis a great film. A great piece of work, and even better when you know it was done a very low budget. The computer graphics were just superb too. This gets a solid 8/10 from me.

Just not my style!

I rent and watched District 9 for the second time.

While I liked it better, my opinion still pretty much was the same.

The movie is more Drama with Sci-Fi elements, but NOT a pure Sci-Fi!

And, I been watching Sci-Fi like crazy ALL my life.

It definitely had a Drama-ish plot, and acting and plot both are good Drama wise, but Imagination here in this movie isn't all that.

Avatar, like had whole planet/aliens that are imagined to very Sci-Fi standards, not so with this movie.

Bug-like aliens are not that imaginative at all!

:whatever:

Well done sherlock. It was never meant to be a "space set sci-fi". It's a drama storyline with sci-fi settings. So?

That said - a lot of the best sci-fi has very dramatic storylines.

Shame you didn't appreciate D9, but don't preach as to what sci-fi is or isn't!

The main thing I didn't like

Is that they should have had text at the bottom when the aliens were talking - Though the guy (actor) barely carried the translation and didn't really explain what the aliens were saying all the time good enough.

Other than that the story seemed okay- and the effects were somewhat decent.

For me it was a 6 out of 10.

I am just astonished Jedi

After everything you said to defend Avatar, then you come and say the same things about this movie that you had to defend against.

This is imo a very poor post by you, I mean you are trying to alter the definition of Sci-fi and reshape it to exclude nearly everything but avatar.

I am speechless

    • I'm reading the reports as EU rejecting Apple's proposal because Trusted System Agent would be an intermediary offered to third party AI's (this article is also worded as such) but Siri AI itself would not pass this intermediary. This would cause a situation where Siri AI would have more direct system access and offer it an unfair advantage. (speaking from EU regulator perspective here) Apple is citing security issues with doing what EU asked for, and I think this also supports this theory, because truly direct system access like Siri AI would make it impossible to control third party AI's running on the devices and e.g. reign them in via adjustments to Trusted System Agent. So, I _think_ this is the sticking point right now: EU saying they need to be on equal footing as Siri AI, Apple saying they can't be because Apple only trusts their own AI. Apple could of course be leaning a bit extra hard towards this because they're biased. One method to find an agreement would be to have Siri AI also run through Trusted System Agent and treat it as untrusted. This kind of defensive architecture design (especially when involving an AI) would honestly not be a very bad idea from a sheer engineering standpoint. But then Apple would need to swallow their pride and adapt worldwide due to EU, and make perhaps major updates delaying Siri AI once more.
    • I have not even heard of that game. will take a look
