My Steam account was Hijacked.

Recommended Posts

agreed you're absolutely right ! But in my post I was relating from my personal experience.

My password was not strong enough (good old pw) but it's not like it was weak either.

Indeed I learned from this experience, I just use even stronger pw.

And had a good laugh when i saw a new game on my account ;-)

how about this then, want to give the sites you were browsing when you had it stolen?

As in, from the moment you put the ticket in, how long did it take to get a resolution?

And in regard to the password comments, I never gave out any information to any dialog box or false website.

sounds like you had some form of malware downloaded when steam opened up or something,i've had someone with a similar problem but with a yahoo account as it got hacked 5 times and he changed the pass each time and poof it happened again and again and again.

check the timing of events dude, you went to a website, got a disconnect from Steam ( i think steam allows simultaneous logins, just not simultaneous plays ), when tried to log back, it said PW was wrong and you got an email saying email change

it sounds like you got hit by the same thing as the fake Windows Update popups, but with a steam login ( more then likely at a site dealing with something about steam ), they are easy to get spoofed by, and look almost exact

From memory it was amazon.co.uk and neowin.

Is it really that hard to tell it's a scam? Every Steam Friends message window blatantly states:

Never tell your password to anyone.

In bold, underlined letters.

You say Steam needs to implement more security measures to prevent things like this from happening, well you know, a lot of it lies in the hands of the user. Cross your fingers the hijacker doesn't VAC ban your account.

Account Security Recommendations

Exactly, no amount of prevention set up by Valve will stop someone from taking your account when you are giving them your information.

I don't understand? Umbrello is saying to not give them you're information not increase password strength?

I don't understand your questions....

You quoted him and the way you were talking is as if you disagree'd with what he was saying even though he pretty much said the same thing as you? unless you're talking to the op and quoting him as a reference? i don't know i just woke up :p

Congrats on getting your account back. I've had this happen to me before even though I never go to shady websites and keep av/spyware running and have a complicated password, etc.

There are other ways to confirm you are the owner and recover your account.

When I recovered mine, I gave them my credit card information and a list of recently purchased games that were added to my account.

yeah i've submitted a form, i've told them the situation, hopefully i can recover it, but i'd never purchased from the store, so i cant use cc details to recover, since i thought i'd never need my Orange box and CSS disks, i've chucked them somewhere and cant seem to find them, only thing left is if they match the ip addresses from mine to the ones i used before 11th august (when i recieved the message), the last game i had was l4d, which i recieved from a friend as a gift, so until i find those CDs i think im screwed :s

Yeah I've known a lot of people that have gotten their accounts "hacked". Which is actually pure BS. It is through social engineering (using chat through groups to make themselves look like valve admins to get info from you) or through phishing sites/malware that cause accounts to be stolen. That is, unless you have a really easily guessable password. I mean if it was that easy for an account to be hacked, you'd see everyone getting hacked.

What's funny though is how there's noobs on games like CS who seem to believe they know people who can "hack into accounts" (which is pure BS from whoever told them that) and get people's IPs just from talking to them on Steam. Which isn't actually possible because Steam is the one actually communicating to both users of chat. User -> Steam -> User rather than User -> User (direct connect). The only way to actually get someone's IP is through creating your own server and having them join it or by hacking into somebody else's server and installing plugins/mods to grab IPs. Of course the average gamer doesn't know much about computers and will believe anything anybody tells them about hacking/ip tracking/etc...

Anyway that was kind of a rant, I just hate it when people on STEAM or any other games claim all this crap which is total BS spewed from their mouths when they know nothing at all about the subject. xD
