Do you care about the story in a game?

Depends on the game. most games have retarded stories.

I got into it on F.E.A.R a little bit, and was starting to get into it on Bioshock, but got stuck so i gave up on it.

I think i was kinda into the story on Half life 2 as well, but its been 2004 since i played and beat the missions, and i dont remember too much.

for me games are much much more fun if they have a nice story line, it's like a movie that you're playing out yourself.

FEAR could've been way better if the story was so much more immersive. It was so tacked-on. Ugh.

people played COD because of the story???? Really???

I played it because it looked damn good and was fun.... but the story really did not have any affect on the game imho. Halo had a story... COD was more of we drop you here, go kill the insurgents.

If story wasn't important, why do so many gamers really want to help out Alyx Vance?

She's not a striking beauty or a cookie cutter Barbie with big boobs like you would see in so many other games.

People really seem to feel for her and her family, because they feel like they are a part of the story of helping her.

I don't need one of those amazing stories with twists and turns at every corner, I mainly look for a great atmosphere in games. That is how I get hooked when the game environment keeps me interested. The story just needs a minimum amount of credibility and then I can enjoy the game.

I wouldn't have stayed hooked on everquest for 4 years unless I enjoyed the lore that kept evolving over time. My favourite games are usually rpgs that have a well thought out story.. if a new oblivion, baldur's gate or fallout would be released every 2 months, I'd never need any other games to fill the gaps :)

Two games that are solid proof that an FPS can contain both groundbreaking gameplay+multiplayer and an awesome story are CoD4, and Halo (series).

No other games have executed both so expertly to create such an awesome combination.

Although if you want story, play a Bioware game. If you want gameplay, TF2 is great.

What the hell?

Have you even played HL2? Deus Ex? System Shock 1 and 2?

I just want to play.

I do like how games like Half life and Bioshock present their story, you are a part of it and not just sitting back watching a short clip wating to get back into the action.

Gaming is not Porn.Nor is it a movie.

Gameplay is the most important [the ones teaching you should already know this] but unless the game is out and out multiplayer,Without a story the game is incomplete and hollow and one will finish it with a sense of "something was missing" feeling.

The story is pretty important, yeah. While running around blowing stuff up can be entertaining (GTA series), it gets old if I have no reason to do so (advancing the story).

No you're not alone, I only recently completed it, but after 2 years almost of reading everyone's glowing reviews I was very confused what the fuss was over.

Call of Duty will always be one man army / faceless hero with team mates I don't give a damn about. Breach and clear gameplay, but it does it so well compared to everyone else which is why I enjoy it. It's not as bad as Battlefield, but the game is all about multiplayer experiences.

I don't think the story in the CoD games was really their big selling point, especially in the war based ones where the ending is pretty obvious

Obviously they are professors and have degress to know what they are teaching.

Story is very important. Im talking about games that are story orientated. Things like Wii Sports and games of that nature obviously do not need much story.

Nah, I guess that's why I don't care about RPG's.

I play games to give me that adrenaline rush or to kill time with. RPG's would put me to sleep and I'd end up killing time and then some more.

Story's pretty important.

For example, I played one of the Final Fantasies on DS. The story made no sense what so ever and was utter ******** so I stopped playing it.

Gameplay's fine. Standard FF nonsense, but the story was just so undescriptive and opened up with too many questions that it just didn't feel like it was worth my time.

thats what happens when you put too much emphasis on storyline in a game... you sacrifice the accessibility for something you hope is good... if you cant at least pick it up and play, then i think the storyline's gone too far... as long as what you are supposed to be doing can be condensed into a block of text which pops up at the push of a button...

i dont know why the college teaches that the storyline is the most important thing in a game... arent you there to learn how to make games, not to learn literature or whatever?

Bioshock is one of my favorite games of all time. I wouldn't think so if it didn't have the great story that accompanied it.

Portal is up there for me as well, and as much as it was a puzzle shooter, they added as much story as it needed to keep the game memorable and compelling.
