Kushan
Their terms of service is crap. Here are my terms, if I pay for a console I can do whatever I want with it and wanna go online for free using backups with it. You can do ANYTHING you like with the console. Microsoft doesn't stop you from doing that. However, you don't OWN live, you pay for a subscription to it, based on their terms. That's what gets taken away from you. Your console still works and you're still free to play what you want on it however you want.

Astra.Xtreme
if you don't want to get you console banned, take out the cord to the internet, play the games, then plug it back in when your done. While that might be "safer", I wouldn't quite say that it will keep you immune from the ban hammer. There's a good chance the console itself records information whether or not you're connected to Live, then phones home.

Dave_teh_Tech
It's more than a "good chance". It DEFINITELY records stuff offline. Agreed, there is no maybe when it comes to that info. Your xbox records everything, multiple times I have unplugged my xbox and played a game and gained some achevements and they were still there when I went online again. Your GT info isn't saved online or on a server somewhere. EDIT: hang on let me take that back, it has some info online but not all of it :p I need more coffee lol Edited August 21, 2009 by Dave_teh_Tech
Kushan
True, there is that, however I was referring to other things. Even if you don't plug a HDD in there, it still records data onto the flash memory.
Smashing Pumpkin
My friend has an xbox 360 but no PC so he can't post a question on here, hence I have to do it for him. If he modded his console by flashing the DVD drive to play backup games and make sure his original discs were kept in perfect condition, and that xbox was banned as a result. Would he just be able to snap off the HDD and put it on a new console (unmodded) and keep playing online with the same GT etc. Or would he get banned for using a GT that has achievements etc. from back up games. t0mbi
the gamertag will be safe... The only thing that happens is his console will be banned..nothing else
what
If he wanted to keep the DVDs in good condition, he could install all of his games to the hard drive before playing them.
Smashing Pumpkin
So he'll be able to just move his HDD onto a new xbox and keep playing legitimately. They (MS) wont mind about game saves/achievements which have been earned with backups?

MS is "scanning" the disc and console, you're safe. :) The ban is probably given when you play way too many "backups" online, for many hrs/day. My console is modded,I rarely play online and even when I did I played using original discs, some games just deserve the cash (like MW2 and Forza III for example).Friend of mine has been playing "backups" online sometimes with really old FW,hasn't been banned in over 2 years, but he doesn't play much either. No iXtreme FW will help you,it's just fake safety. The only sure way is ... do not mod your console. Smashing Pumpkin
I'm just wondering why everyone isn't doing this then, if you just need to buy a second hand core/arcade console and you can switch all your $100 accessories between the consoles and have the best of both worlds, live and backups. yeah he'll be able to move his hdd to a new xbox. but why risk banning an xbox and then buying a new xbox rather than getting a few scratches on disks? I actually asked him this myself and he couldn't really give me a straight answer. I think he has some sort of 'thing' about the cleanliness of original discs. Weird, but he's a friend so I said I'd ask around for him.
what
I'm just wondering why everyone isn't doing this then, if you just need to buy a second hand core/arcade console and you can switch all your $100 accessories between the consoles and have the best of both worlds, live and backups. Because with the introduction of hard drive installs, all you're doing there is buying a second console you don't really need, and it's just another box to find a space for. Smashing Pumpkin
You still need to use the original discs though so HDD installs doesn't really remove the risk of scratching discs. It only means faster loading times and a quieter xbox 360, sure perhaps a little less risk of scratch but my friend wants to be completely sure... Actually it does, the disk doesn't spin (it just spins a little when you turn on the console) during games. It's just sitting there to make sure you have the original. Why is he so afraid anyway, does he move his console during games?
Smashing Pumpkin
Switching discs to change games means using the disc, if he made backups I think he intends to keep his original discs in a locked safe to ensure their safety.

Is he paranoid? :p The chances that even one of the discs gets scratched is minimum. I'm very careful with my stuff and even I don't give a damn about having the original discs inside (not that I have a choice).

I'm very careful with my stuff and even I don't give a damn about having the original discs inside (not that I have a choice). Yeah it's cause he had an accident with some wire wool and it all got stuck in his hands, so now he never likes to handle original optical media, I have to make backups for him and then if his wire wool hands scratch the discs then it's not so much trouble for me to just make him another back up, but obviously I can't be there at his beck and call to change his discs all the time for him. His condition is terrible and it means that I have to do a lot for him like these back ups, buuuut he is great for doing my washing up, that burnt on sauce in the pan can be a right pain to get off.
