MS increases Arcade 360 price in UK

Retailers have told Eurogamer that Microsoft will increase the price of the Arcade Xbox 360 bundle to ?159.99 (from ?129.99) starting 1st September. The five XBLA games will no longer be included in the bundle, either.

ShopTo boss Igor Cipolletta received confirmation from Microsoft this morning, as did a corroborating independent retail chain source.

We're also told that Microsoft will bump the price of individual Xbox 360 accessories by one or two pounds. Our independent retail source said this is being done to counteract the poor pound-to-Euro currency exchange rate.

Furthermore, the email from Microsoft to retailers mentioned only Arcade and Elite bundles. This strengthens rumours that the Premium Xbox 360 bundle is being discontinued.

Edit: adding this here to hopefully extinguish any flames before people jump to conclusions..

Depending on what is included in the Arcade box, it might simply be a case the Arcade has actually been removed, and the Pro has been renamed.

i.e if the "new Arcade" includes a hard drive.

WTF over the last few months the pound has made great gains against the dollar and the euro.

Also this makes the Wii look like such a better option now, incompetence strikes again at MS

That's what I'm thinking, but aren't we expecting the Elite to drop it's price? After all, if Sony are dropping the price, MS will need to compete.

This must surely be a re-branding of the Pro and a removal of the current Arcade model, otherwise they are just shooting themselves in the foot.

Yeah but they're probably trying to recoup the "losses" from the past year of weakness.

The price of the Arcade going up is bad enough...but accessories as well?! They're already so expensive (on all platforms)

You really think that's what they're doing?? That would be a perfect way to confuse everyone...why not keep the Pro name...

LOL what losses? They've been showing growth and great sales for years and never stopped. Even in the recession they've managed to grow Xbox 360 platform by 21%.

Still half the price of PS3 ;)

Was that really necessary?! There is no need whatsoever to bring any other console into this...except the Wii, maybe, as it too had a price increase.

Anyway, I put "losses" in quotation marks because I didn't mean actual losses...I meant lower profits.

most of you here probably already have an xbox so why are you all so ****ed off?

Because the price of accessories is going up too (I'm not an owner...but I can understand the anger when controllers, for example, are painfully expensive)

That seems bewildering if it's true. I can only assume the Arcade is going to be repackaged into a much more substantial product, justifying the price hike.. if not, I think MS might have made a bit of a stupid mistake!

Bill emailed me, he told me he doesn't really have wireless problems, he's just ignoring you. He also said you're talking a load of BS and called you a nub.

True story.
