Monday 17-Aug-2009 11:30 AM Commander's Challenge coming to download services for summer

EA's unveiled a new version of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, called 'Commander's Challenge', for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

The slimmed down version of the RTS will challenge players "to take on the world's toughest commanders and conquer the globe in 50 unique challenges", says EA.

Each challenge features its own over-the-top twist - including an army of psychic Japanese school girls - and as players progress they'll unlock more units, technology and challenges.

EA promises "trademark fast and action-packed C&C gameplay, tongue-in-cheek live-action cinematics, new units and a new game mode" for the 800 Microsoft Point (?6.80) and $9.99 PSN asking prices.

"Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 Commander's Challenge launches players into action-packed scenarios while going head-to-head against ruthless commanders who will stop at nothing to crush your army," said producer Wes Eckhart.

"Commander's Challenge delivers the ultimate RTS gameplay experience console players have been craving. Delivering over thirty hours of RTS entertainment, it is an incredible value at less than $10."

In the press release there's some confusion on the release date (it says both autumn and summer) but we're chasing EA now.

Not really my sort of game (I think, loved RA2 but hated RA3 for the PC), but glad to see this kind of thing coming from EA.

I'm guessing the PS3 version still doesn't support mouse and keyboard and will fall by the wayside among many a sigh of "meh" from gamers. At least End War changed up the game play/controls enough that it is playable, these plain RTS console games with their revolutionary ground-breaking paradigm-shattering genre-redefining CommandStick?TMp> interface just make you wish you were playing it on a PC.

Erm, at $10 I don't think something like this will fall by the wayside, personally. IMO, the Command & Conquer games are perfectly playable on the 360 controller. I think it's easy to navigate, personally.

Hated the console versions, didn't like having the pointer in the middle and moving the screen, organising teams were a chore too.

/me hugs CnC PC.
